UW-Whitewater wins men's national title - Mar 23, 2014 Quardell Young (6'0''-PG) never hesitated, taking the inbounds pass
and dribbling past all the defenders before laying it in with 0.9
seconds remaining. Youngs basket and free throw led UW-Whitewater to a
75-73 win over Williams College (Pa.) in the NCAA Division III mens
basketball national title game Saturday at the Salem Civic Center. I
knew I didnt have a lot of time so I basically made an in-and-out move
and then had one step to the inside available, so I took it, said Young,
a junior. The Warhawks (29-4), whose football team has won five national
championships in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, also in Salem, since 2007,
won their fourth title in as many trips to the title game. Whitewater
also won in 1984, 1989 and 2012. Whitewater also matched UW-Plattevilles
for the second-most championships in Division III history. North Park
(Ill.) has five. The Warhawks appeared to let their second national
title in three years slip between their fingers when 6-foot-9
Michael Mayer (6'9''-C) tipped in a missed basket with 4.9 seconds
remaining, giving the Ephs a 73-72 lead. It took Young just 4 seconds to
weave through the Williams defense, laying it in while drawing a foul on
Mayer. We do a lot of that in practice, Young said of not calling a
timeout. I felt like it was enough time to get up and down the floor.
Whitewater coach
Pat Miller has now been part of three of the Warhawks titles one as
player and two as a coach. What a great basketball game. I dont think
you could ask for anything better at our level, to have our national
championship come down to a finish like that, Miller said. Both teams
played hard, both teams played well and it really was a great experience
for me as a coach to be part of this game; I think its one well remember
for a long time. Whitewater led 37-33 at the half, but held a 15-point
lead at one point in the first half before the Ephs rallied late in the
half, using an 11-0 run to pull within two. Williams (28-5) took a 56-52
lead after Mayer made a pair of free throws with 10:27 left to play. The
score was tied seven times, the last at 69-all after
Eric Bryson (6'2''-G)'s driving basket with 2:37 to play. Two free
throws by
Duncan Robinson (6'7''-F) gave the Ephs the lead back, and Bryson
regained it with a deep 3-pointer with 54.7 seconds to play. Williams
called its final timeout to set up a play, but Steve Egan made a steal
before
Alex Merg (6'1''-G) was fouled. However, the Whitewater senior guard
missed the front end of a 1-and-1, giving the Ephs one more shot. After
a timeout with 18.7 seconds to play, Robinson drove in and missed, but
Mayer tipped it in. Young then scored the winner. When they made the
tip-in, they were scrambling so the floor was spaced, Young said of his
94-foot dash. He just made a really good play, Mayer said. Robinsons
contested heave from halfcourt was well off the mark at the final
buzzer. Former Beloit Memorial athlete
KJ Evans (6'3''-G) led Whitewater with 22 points and was named the
tournament MVP. Young scored 13 points while former Poynette standout
Cody Odegaard (6'2''-G) had eight points. Mayer scored a game-high
26 points to lead the Ephs, who won the title in 2003 but has lost in
the final three times since then. It was a heartbreaking loss, to say
the least, Williams coach Mike Maker said. Its hard to put into words
the emptiness I feel for not being able to help them win.Courtesy of: madison.com CoSIDA NCAA Division III Academic All-America Awards 2013-2014 - Feb 24, 2014

Reese's is the official candy partner of the NCAA. The East All-Stars, who were led by Andre Nixon (6'3''-G) (Purchase) with 20 points, led 52-46 at halftime and held the lead for most of the second half. A layup by Bonney with 8:17 to play tied the score at 86-86 and the West never trailed again. David Langan (6'8''-C-91) (Wesley) and Schleigh followed with baskets before another Bonney score gave the West a 93-86 advantage. Two free throws by Nixon with 1:30 remaining cut the West lead to two points before Jared Suderley (6'6''-F-91) (Hartwick) scored on a layup with 23 seconds left to seal the win. Langan led coach Bill Leatherman 's (Bridgewater) West team with 13 rebounds and DJ Woodmore (6'3''-G) (Virginia Wesleyan) added 10.
