Washington State beats Amherst in Division III championship game

Washington State - Amherst 90:68
Amherst failed to defend their Division III title as they fell short to Washington State in the title decider yesterday. Senior Troy Ruths (6'6''-F-85) exploded with game-high 33 points to propel the Bears to the first ever national title. Troy Ruths was active in the opening minutes as he scored quick 6 points and Washington State jumped to an 8:2 lead. Cameron Smith (6'5''-F-87) added 5 point in a row for the Bears and stretched the lead to 13:4. Washington State was not about to stop as Aaron Thompson drilled back-to-back trebles and Ruths posted two points from charity stripe to build a 21:8 margin midway through the first half. Amherst trimmed the gap a bit and trailed by 10 points late in the half. But Caleb Knepper (6'6''-F) connected from afar and Troy Ruths was unstoppable inside the paint to carry Washington State to a 45:32 advantage at the long break. Troy Ruths opened the second half with 6 consecutive points to deepen the damage. But Amherst refused to give up with straight triples from Andrew Olson (5'10''-G) and Fletcher Walters (6'7''-F). Soon the Jeffs cut the deficit to 6 points but it was as close as Amherst could get. Washington State reacted with a 16:2 run to restore a comfortable buffer. Amherst never returned into contest and had to surrender at the end. Aaron Thompson (6'3''-G-88) nailed 19 points for the winners. Fletcher Walters scored 17 points for Amherst. Andrew Olson had 16 points in defeat. Troy Ruths was named the tournament's MVP after the game.
The All-Tournament Team included Troy Ruths and Aaron Thompson of Washington State, Andrew Olson of Amherst, Derek Van Solkema (6'0''-G, college: Hope (MI)) of Hope and Ursinus's John Noonan.

Washington State: Troy Ruths 33, Aaron Thompson 19, Tyler Nading (6'7''-F-87) 13
Amherst: Fletcher Walters 17, Andrew Olson 16
