Hope College won the Title! - Mar. 26, 2006 - by Eurobasket The Flying Dutch won the NCAA Division III national championship in Springfield, Mass. defeating S.Maine 69-56. In the semi-final game, Hope defeated Scranton, Pa. 59-56. The national women's basketball championship is the second in Flying Dutch history. The first was won in 1990. Coach Brian Morehouse's Dutch conclude their banner season with a 30-game winning streak and school-record 33-1 mark. Senior guard Bria Ebels was named the tournament's most outstanding player. In the championship game she scored 18 points. Junior Julie Henderson was voted to the all-tournament team. Hope's amazing tournament run was accomplished by winning all six NCAA games on the road and five of the six vixtories were against teams ranked among the nation's top ten in Division III polls. An enthusiastic following of Hope fans numbering more than 500 turned the Springfield College gymnasium into a sea of orange. Courtesy of Ncaa.sports.com Virginia Wesleyan is the National Champion! - Mar. 19, 2006 - by Eurobasket In Salem this Sunday, Virginia Wesleyan grabbed the title with a 59- 56win over Wittenberg. The sophomore guard TonTon Balenga (6'1''-G) put up another great performance , especially in the second-half, and hit the game-winning shot as Virginia Wesleyan distanced itself for the win. Balenga got a shot, stole the ball and then tied the game at 52-52 with a short jump shot with 1:54 left on the clock till the end of the game. Wesleyan grabbed its first lead when Brandon Adair (6'5''-F) got a layup with 1:20 to push the Marlins (30-3) ahead 54-52. Adair also tied the game at 56-56 when he hit a pair of free throws with 49.3 seconds left. After Wittenberg’s Daniel Russ was called for traveling, Balenga discharged the game’s winning 3-point shot with only 2.1 seconds left in the game. Balenga and Adair combined for most of the Marlins’ points. Balenga hit a game high 22 followed by his teammate’s 21-point effort. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference, has claimed its first NCAA team championship won by one of its schools of any sort. While Wittenberg lost its chance of winning the second Division III basketball title in the school’s history, after the Tigers won the crown in 1977. Wittenberg (30-4) was led by Dane Borchers (6'8''-C) with 15 points. The Tigers, who led by 10 points at the half, hit 21-of-44 shots from the field and held a 29-26 edge on the boards as Daniel Russ (6'9''-C) collected nine rebounds. NCAA D3 Awards 2006 - May 5, 2006
