Pomona-Pitzer Secures the 2020 SCIAC Postseason Tournament Crown - Mar 1, 2020

The top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball team earned its second straight, and third overall, Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament title with a 87-66 victory over second-seeded Redlands Saturday evening at Voelkel Gym on the campus of the Sagehens.
With the win, Pomona-Pitzer improves to 21-5 on the season and receives the SCIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. Redlands moves to 20-7 overall and will await a possible at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. The 2020 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Selection Show is slated for Monday, March 2 at 9:30 a.m. PST.
Pomona-Pitzer surged out of the gate in the first half running out to an 18-4 advantage over the first eight minutes of the games as the Sagehens' Alex Preston swished a three-pointer at the 12:02 mark to give the hosts a 14-point cushion.
Pomona-Pitzer led by as many as 23 (34-11 at the 7:13 mark) as Matthew Eberle (6'5''-F) canned a trey as the Sagehens mounted a 46-25 lead at intermission. Pomona-Pitzer shot 45.9% from the floor and 43.5% from three-point range while limiting Redlands to 28.1% shooting and 8.3% (1-for-12) shooting from long distance.
Micah Elan (6'4''-G-97) - the Tournament MVP - led all players with 13 first half points, while Preston and Brendan Mora (6'5''-G) followed with nine and eight points for the Sagehens in the opening stanza. On the glass, Jack Boyle (6'5''-F) pulled down five boards.
David Menary (6'5''-F) led the Bulldogs with five points, while Jack Roggin (6'0''-PG) and Kameron Wright (6'7''-F) added four each. Griffin Barker and Roggin led Redlands with four rebounds each.
Pomona-Pitzer kept its offensive rhythm going to start the second half as Elan struck for two more three-pointers, while Boyle converted on another triple to give the Sagehens a 59-36 lead five minutes into the second frame.
Redlands chipped away at the deficit and used a Barker three-pointer to pull the Bulldogs to within 16 at 69-53 with 7:13 to play, and later narrowed the gap to 14 on a trey from Aiden Williams at the 5:07 mark to set the score at 75-61 in favor of Pomona-Pitzer. That's as close as Redlands could get as the Sagehens maintained at least a 14-point lead for the duration of the contest en route to the 87-66 victory.
Elan led all players with 22 points including five three-pointers, while Rees finished with 18 points on the strength of an 11-for-12 effort from the free throw line. Preston followed with 13 points, while Boyle added 10 to give Pomona-Pitzer four players in double figures.
Off the bench, Mora added eight points, while Boyle pulled down eight rebounds. Elan and Rees dished out six assists apiece, while James Kelbert added four steals.
Barker finished with 12 points in the losing effort for Redlands and collected a game-best nine rebounds, while Wright added 11 points. Williams contributed 10 points off the bench for the Bulldogs, while Roggin added six assists.
