Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Captures SCIAC Men's Basketball Postseason Tournament Title - Mar 2, 2017
Top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps defeated second-seeded Cal Lutheran 77-71 on Saturday evening to take the 2016-17 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) men's basketball postseason tournament. This is the fifth overall postseason tournament title for the Stags as they last won in 2014-15 With the win the Stags improve to 22-4 on the season while the Kingsmen fall to 20-7. The Stags will represent the SCIAC with the automatic qualification to the NCAA tournament. CMS built a 10-point lead going into halftime at 39-29 with their largest lead being 12 at 18:44 in the second half. Cal Lutheran took the lead with 11:45 left in the game at 49-48 which gave way to a back-and-forth affair for the last ten minutes. At 6:09 Miles President (6'1''-G) went to the line and sunk his two FTs to put CMS up 62-58. Tied at 67-67 with 3:27 Kendrick Morris (6'9''-C) put in two of his seventeen points to give CMS the two-point lead. With 1:06 remaining Adrian Francis (6'0''-PG) went to the line for CLU and made both to keep it a one-point contest at 70-69. After an offensive foul on CLU with 31.4 remaining gave the Stags the ball back before junior Michael Scarlett (6'4''-G) was fouled making both of his shots to give CMS a 72-69 lead. Caleb Richey (5'10''-PG-95) from CLU made a quick bucket before Riley Hall (6'5''-F) was sent to the line draining both for CMS. CMS caused a turnover on the last CLU possession with 4.1 second left before Morris hit a bucket with 1.1 remaining while being fouled on the play to end the game with a 77-71 victory for CMS. Scarlett had a game-high 26 points for the Stags and added four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Morris added 17 points for CMS while Hall and President each hit the double-digit mark chipping in 16 and 11 points respectively. Cal Lutheran was led by Austin Cole (6'5''-G) with 20 points while Blake Miles (6'4''-F) added 13 points and Wolfgang Wood 12. Francis gave the Kingsmen a spark off the bench pouring in 13 points. Junior guard Richey dished out 12 assists.
