No. 1 FSC Repeats in Men's Basketball; Powell Nabs Second Tourney MOP-Feb 29, 2024
Top-seeded Farmingdale State College earned an 87-68 victory over No. 2-seed Yeshiva University in the Skyline Conference Championship final on Sunday afternoon to capture consecutive crowns. For the second straight season, guard Corey Powell (6'4''-G) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Championship, too, as he led the way for the Rams on both ends of the floor. Powell finished with a team-high 19 points and held the Skyline's leading scorer (YU's Zevi Samet) to just 12 points. The Rams (26-2) have earned automatic qualification into the 64-team, 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship, which gets underway next weekend. FSC will learn its first-round match-up via an online selection show at NCAA.com, Monday (Feb. 26) at 1 p.m. Farmingdale State controlled play throughout the first half as they led 45-37 in the final minute. With 14 seconds on the clock forward Kentrell Evans (6'5''-F) tallied a layup before the Rams registered a steal and 3-pointer at the buzzer by guard Michael Notias (5'11''-PG) to take a 50-37 advantage into the break. Yeshiva (16-12) came out strong to start the second half, as it cut the deficit to just five, 52-47, with 16:30 remaining. FSC responded with a 6-0 run, featuring points from forward Nick Hurowitz (6'5''-G), Powell and guard Jevon Santos (5'8''-PG), to regain an 11-point edge at 58-47. Following a free-throw by the Maccabees, forward Jovayne Walters (6'7''-F) made a layup and forward Liam Buckley (6'5''-F) tallied a 3-pointer to give the Rams a 15-point lead, 63-48. Leading 67-54 with 9:18 to play, four consecutive layups – including two by Hurowitz – put the Rams ahead by 21, 75-54. Farmingdale State took their largest lead of the game with 1:47 on the clock on a Santos free-throw go in front by 24 at 87-63. Yeshiva scored the final five points to account for the 87-68 final score. The Macs were paced by 22 points from Or Sundjyvsky.
