Farmingdale State earns second #SkylineMBB crown in three years - Feb 25, 2019
Senior guard Matthew Graham (6'2''-G) shot 10-for-16 from the floor en route to a 25-point, seven-rebound, four-assist afternoon Sunday at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center, earning Most Outstanding Player accolades for the 2019 Skyline Conference Men's Basketball Championship, as the top-seeded Farmingdale State College Rams captured their second title in the last three seasons with an 81-75 triumph over second-seeded Yeshiva University. With the victory, head coach Brendan Twomey's Rams (20-7) earn the Skyline's automatic bid to next week's 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship -- that 64-team field and pairings will be announced Monday at 12:30 p.m. ET on ncaa.com. Fellow senior George Riefenstahl (6'8''-F) contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds in the FSC victory, while teammates Ali Mableton (6'3''-G) and Jermaine Fraser (6'5''-F) (5-for-5 FG) went for 14 and 12 points, respectively. Yeshiva (19-8) received a game effort from junior forward Gabriel Leifer (6'5''-F), who registered game-highs of 27 points (12-for-20 FG), 15 rebounds and eight assists. Freshman guard Ryan Turell (6'7''-G/F) added 20 points for the Maccabees, while junior SimcHa Halpert (6'3''-G) added 14. Leading 34-32 at the start of the second half, the Rams opened with back-to-back Jermaine Fraser layups and a trey by Graham to extend their advantage to 41-32. Yeshiva quickly responded with nine-straight markers to even the score at 41-all with 14:11 left on the clock. Tied 43-43 with 13:42 remaining, Farmingdale State used layups by both Riefenstahl and junior forward Troy Feeney (6'5''-G/F) to go back out in front by four. After a basket by YU's Daniel Katz (6'4''-F) and a 3-pointer from Halpert on the next two Yeshiva trips down the floor, Mableton hit a jumper to give the Rams a one-point edge, 49-48. Halpert connected on a four-point play to give Yeshiva a two-point edge with 8:07 remaining, before a conventional 3-point play and a pair at the charity stripe by Chaz Platt (6'0''-PG) preceded Graham's trifecta to push the hosts in front for good, 61-55, with 6:35 to go. Yeshiva cut the deficit to five, 71-66, with 2:07 left to play until four straight free-throws by Mableton and Platt brought the Rams lead back to nine. FSC led by five-plus points the rest of the way to secure the program's fifth Skyline crown.
