Saint John's wins MIAC Playoff championship - Mar 2, 2022
For the eighth time in program history and third time in as many postseasons, the Saint John's Johnnies are Men's Basketball Playoff champions of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).The top-seeded Johnnies battled back from a 38-37 halftime deficit to fend off No. 6 seed Macalester, 75-71, at Sexton Arena in Collegeville on Sunday afternoon. The victory secured an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament for Saint John's. Senior center Zach Hanson (6'6''-G) starred for SJU on Sunday, scoring 12 points and pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds. Carson Schoeller (6'9''-G) had the hot hand off the bench for the Johnnies, drilling 6-of-7 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 from behind the three-point line for a team-best 16 points. Bench play was key for SJU, as three of the team's four players in double-figures on Sunday came on in reserve duty. Macalester - back in the MIAC title game for the first time since 2004 - played tough throughout, again getting strong offensive output from guards Gabriel Ramos (6'3''-G) and Caleb Williams (6'2''-G), who combined for 35 points on the afternoon. With the victory, Saint John's claimed the MIAC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.
