Messiah senior guard Mason Wang was named MAC Commonwealth Championship MVP
The second-seeded Hood Blazers defeated the top-seeded Eastern Eagles, 75-71, on Sunday to claim their first-ever MAC Commonwealth men's basketball title.
Hood senior guard Mason Wang was named the MAC Commonwealth Championship Most Valuable Player (MVP). Wang finished the title game with a game-high 26 points on 8-for-16 shooting and a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. He also added seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in the win. Wang finished the tournament with 58 points (19.3 ppg), 13 rebounds, nine assists, six steals and two blocks.
The Blazers took a 40-39 advantage into halftime and were able to hang on to the lead the rest of the way, outscoring Eastern 35-32 in the second half.
The game saw 12 lead changes. Eastern had its largest lead in the first half by eight points (35-27) with 4:33 remaining. However, Hood went on a 13-4 run to take the one-point halftime lead.
Eastern then raced out to a 49-40 lead to begin the second half. The Eagles largest lead came at 53-43 at the 14:12 mark. The Blazers went on a 15-4 run over the next six minutes to take a 58-57 lead. The game went back-and-forth over the final eight minutes before Hood was able to hand on in the final minute.
Christopher Smalls (12) and Trumaine Strickland (10) also finished in double-figure points for the Blazers.
Eastern's Draig Cooley led his team with 24 points on 9-for-12 shooting to go with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. William Blet (14) and Jaron Fairweather (11) also finished in double-figure points
