Warriors Top Bulldogs for 2021 MAC Freedom Crown - Mar 18, 2021
The second-seeded Lycoming Warriors defeated the top-seeded DeSales Bulldogs, 69-53, on the road Friday evening to capture the 2021 MAC Freedom title in their first year back in the conference since 2006-07.Lycoming has won back-to-back conference titles after winning the 2020 MAC Commonwealth title a season ago. The Warriors now have six conference titles, including three in the MAC Commonwealth (2016, 2017, 2020) and three in the MAC Freedom (2002, 2004, 2021). Lycoming sophomore forward Deaundre Manuel (6'5''-F) was named the MAC Freedom Championship Most Valuable Player (MVP). Manuel finished the game with 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including 2-for-2 from long range. The sophomore also had six rebounds and a steal. The Warrior took a 40-20 halftime lead after an impressive 53 percent shooting from the field. After shooting just 23 percent from the field in the first half, DeSales outscored Lycoming, 33-29, in the second half. But the deficit was too much. Lycoming had three players score in double figures including Manuel, D'Andre Edmond (6'5''-F) (15 points) and Steven Hamilton (6'0''-PG) (12 points). Albright junior center Corey Simmons was named the MAC Commonwealth Championship Most Valuable Player (MVP). Simmons finished the game with 24 points on 11-for-15 shooting. The junior also had 12 rebounds and a block for a double-double. The Lions were able to take a 39-30 halftime lead against the home team. Lebanon Valley surged in the second half, outscoring Albright 47-43, but it was not enough to overcome the half-time deficit. Albright had three players score in double figures including Simmons, Samuel Majekodunmi (6'2''-G) (17 points) and Jordan Guerrero (6'5''-F) (15 points). After the first night of the MAC Commonwealth / MAC Freedom Crossover Challenge, the leagues are even at 1-1 with one game remaining on Friday.
