Delaware Valley Topples Stevens in MAC Freedom Championship-Mar 7, 2025
Delaware Valley secured its fourth MAC Freedom Championship in dramatic fashion, defeating Stevens Institute of Technology in the final minutes. Antonio Redding (6'0''-PG) was named MVP after an outstanding 29-point performance.
Stevens came out strong, blocking two early shots and jumping to a 7-0 lead before Redding broke their momentum. After another blocked shot, Zoelin Pair (6'6''-F) knocked down a mid-range jumper, prompting Aggies head coach Kaba to call a timeout with his team trailing 13-7 just five minutes in. Out of the timeout, the Aggies turned the ball over twice, but Redding found Jake McGinty (5'11''-PG) open for a three-pointer, cutting the deficit to six. On the ensuing inbound, Redding stole the ball and scored, narrowing the gap, though the Ducks quickly regained control.
McGinty and Redding both hit mid-range jumpers near the midway mark of the first half, giving DelVal its first lead of the afternoon. Jeremiah Alexander made an immediate impact upon entering, stealing the ball and assisting Redding for another bucket with 7:21 left. The score remained tight at 29-25 in favor of Stevens before Jack Spellman (6'9''-F) tallied his 14th point. Following a layup from Pair, both teams exchanged blocked shots, and the Aggies ended the first half on a 3:15 scoring drought, trailing 27-26 at halftime.
Redding opened the second half with a three-pointer, but both teams struggled with turnovers and fouls, managing just one field goal in the first four minutes. Kyle Maddison broke the scoring lull with a layup, putting the Ducks ahead 39-31 with 15:10 remaining. Pair ended DelVal's drought by converting an offensive rebound into a layup, but Maddison responded with a three-pointer at the other end.
With 12:30 left, Redding drained a jumper while drawing a foul, completing a three-point play to cut the deficit to four. He then hit another shot, making it a two-point game. Moments later, Kamal Johnson (5'11''-PG) stole the ball and scored, tying the game at 10:53 and forcing a Stevens timeout. The teams exchanged jumpers before Jordan Gombs (6'2''-F) buried a corner three, giving DelVal a 51-48 lead with eight minutes to go. Both teams endured a two-minute scoring drought before Pair and the Aggies dominated the offensive boards, leading to Johnson sinking two free throws to extend the lead to five.
At the 3:27 mark, Spellman made it a two-point game from the free-throw line. The Aggies turned the ball over but regained possession after a Stevens shot clock violation. A minute later, Spellman tied the game at 60 with another pair of free throws, and a DelVal turnover led to a clutch Stevens three-pointer.
Trailing by three, Alexander came up big, stealing the ball and throwing down a dunk before blocking Spellman's shot with 42 seconds left. McGinty secured a crucial offensive rebound, and DelVal called a timeout. Out of the break, Redding sank his 29th point of the afternoon, sealing the Aggies' victory after Mike Goodall (6'1''-G)'s three-point attempt at the buzzer missed.

The York College men's basketball team capture the fifth conference title in school history as they defeated Alvernia University 82-67 in the 2025 MAC Commonwealth title game on Saturday afternoon in York.
The championship is the first Commonwealth title in school history as the Spartans became members of the league in 2020-21. York's previous four league titles came in the old Capital Athletic Conference. Senior Kai Cipalla (6'4''-F) was named the tournament MVP.
The Spartans advance to the NCAA Tournament with a record of 21-6 while the Golden Wolves see their season come-to-a-close with a mark of 16-11.

How It Happened
• The Golden Wolves broke out to a very early 6-3 lead only to see the Spartans hit lay-ups on three straight possessions to take a 9-6 lead. • York fashioned a 13-5 run, pushing their lead to 10 at 35-25. Jackson Mascari (6'4''-F) led the run with five points. Alvernia sliced the lead back down to six before Kai Cipalla hit a pair of free throws with three seconds left in the half, giving York a 40-32 lead.
• The Spartans came out of the intermission a team possessed, as York scored eight points in their first three possessions to take a 48-32 lead. York kept the lead at a minimum of 15 and grew it to 20 for the first time on a Pat Gilhool (6'3''-F) three with 14:14 left in the game. York pushed the lead to a game-high 23 (71-48) points on a Tate Landis triple with 7:42 left in the game. York's lowest lead the rest of the game came at the end of the contest while Alvernia scored the final four points of the contest for the 15-point Spartan win.
