Albion topples Trine, 76-73, for MIAA Tournament Title - Feb 24, 2019
The Albion men's basketball team prevailed in a back-and-forth basketball game with top-seed Trine Saturday evening in the Championship game of the 2019 MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Trine's MTI Center. With the victory, the Britons earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship, the teams first appearance in the national tournament since 2005. Albion will learn their tournament seeding Monday, Feb. 25. Once again Albion's Jamezell Davis (5'9''-PG), provided late heroics, as the sophomore hit a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to give the Brits a three-point cushion. Trine was unable to get a good shot on the ensuing possession, with the miss finding the hands of Nate Collins to secure the win. Albion's Quinton Armstrong (6'5''-F) came off the bench to score a game-best 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field; Armstrong had 15 of those points in the first half, making the first seven shots attempted. Caden Ebeling (6'7''-F) added 16 points with nine rebounds, and Davis finished with 11 points. Trine (19-8) had four starters score double figures, led by a 19-point performance by Langston Johnson (6'2''-G). Ellis Cummings (6'8''-C) had 17 points, nine rebounds, and three blocked shots. Albion (19-8) and Trine combined for just 18 turnovers in the game, which also featured no lead larger than seven points, nine ties, and nine lead changes.
