SCRANTON, Pa.—Sophomore guard Zach Ashworth (6'2''-G) etched his name among the all-time legendary performances in University of Scranton history Saturday night in the championship game of the Landmark Conference tournament at the Long Center.
He connected on 9 of 11 shots from the field to finish with a career-high 26 points as the Royals held off Susquehanna, 80-75 in overtime, to win their second straight Landmark title and 19th overall conference championship in school history. Scranton, now 21-6, also received 15 points from sophomore guard Luke Hawk (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) and senior forward Paul Biagioli (6'6''-F) (Waverly, Pa./Abington Heights) and 12 points from senior guard Ryan Fitzpatrick (6'4''-G) (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga).
Susquehanna, now 18-8, was led by senior forward Joel Patch (6'6''-G/F) (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) with 19 points and 22 rebounds—his fourth straight ‘double-double' and his 16th of the season—and freshman guard Spenser Spencer (6'0''-G) (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) added 15 points, five assists, four rebounds, and three steals. The Crusaders, who overcame a 10-point deficit with 6:08 left to take a one-point lead with 1:10 remaining, also received 12 points and five assists from senior guard Matt McDevitt (6'2''-G) (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) and 10 points from junior guard Bryant Majors (6'3''-G) (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg).
Ashworth came to the forefront in the overtime period, scoring nine of the Royals' 14 points. He scored the first five points of the extra stanza to give Scranton a 71-66 lead before the Crusaders came back twice to tie the game—at 71-71 with 3:29 left and 75-75 with 17 seconds remaining. Ashworth came through with two more clutch plays down the stretch, draining a 3-pointer with 1:22 left to give the Royals a 75-73 lead and set up FitzPatrick's momentum-turning 3-pointer with nine seconds left with an assist to give Scranton a 78-75 lead.
Susquehanna had an opportunity to send it into another overtime period, but Majors missed a 3-pointer with four seconds left. Royal junior guard Dan Oconnell (6'0''-G) (Somers, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) got the rebounds, was fouled, and hit two free throws with two seconds left to set the final score.
The game featured eight ties and seven lead changes. By halftime, Patch had already had a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, and Spencer added 11 points, including three 3-pointers, but the Royals, behind 13 points by Biagioli, managed to squeeze out a 35-33 lead by intermission. It remained close throughout most of the second half until FitzPatrick keyed an 8-0 spurt with a 3-pointer and senior Paul Hawk (6'8''-F) (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) and Ashworth followed with five free throws to give Scranton its largest lead, 61-51, with 6:08 left. Spencer hit a jump shot, Patch followed with a traditional 3-point play, McDevitt and Majors added lay-ups, and sophomore forward Hunter McKain (6'5''-F) (Ligonier, Pa./Shady Side Academy) capped off a 13-2 run with a tip-in as the Crusaders wedged out a one-point lead, 64-63, with 1:10 left. After Biagioli made both ends of a one-on-one free throw opportunity and O'Connell made one of two charity tosses with 31 seconds left, McKain sent the game into overtime by calmly sinking two free throws with five seconds remaining. For the game, Scranton shot nearly 44 percent from the field and connected on 24 of 31 free throw attempts (77.4 percent). Ashworth's previous career-high was 22 points in an 86-77 win over Susquehanna on January 9 at the Long Center and in a 91-74 victory over Albright, also at the Long Center, on December 13.
Scranton and Susquehanna will find out Monday if their overall records are enough to warrant a Pool B bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III championships. The Landmark Conference does not have an automatic bid for the NCAA tournament, but will receive one beginning next season.
