Wilson captures first CSAC title with win over Cairn - Feb 27, 2022
Wilson College shot an even 50 percent (27-for-54) from the field as the Phoenix (18-7) won its first Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship with a 77-72 victory over Cairn (15-10) Saturday afternoon in men's basketball action.
The Phoenix won its first men's basketball championship and will now advance to the NCAA tournament. Cairn, who was the defending champion and made it's third straight appearance in the CSAC title game, finished at 15-10.
Championship MVP Adrian Thomas (6'3''-G) scored 14 points for the Phoenix, one of four players to score in double figures. Antonio Bussey (6'7''-C) scored 23 points off of the bench for Wilson, while Warrick Godwin (6'1''-G), Jr., had 14 points for Wilson, with Darryl Garib (6'3''-F) netting ten.
For Cairn, Jesse Rivera (5'11''-PG) scored 19 points with Dashaun Cain (6'3''-G) and Wes Murray (6'6''-F) each scoring 15. Kameron Clark (6'6''-C) scored 13 points and had 14 rebounds for the Highlanders.
Leading by five at halftime, Wilson had to fend off a late Cairn charge as the Highlanders got to within two twice. The last instance was when Murray scored on a driving layup with 40 seconds to go to cut the Wilson lead to 71-69. Wilson was able to convert 6-of-9 foul shots down the stretch to take the victory.
