Griffins battle to title of Atlantic East champion - Feb 27, 2019
The top-seeded Gwynedd Mercy University men's basketball team used a strong offensive second half to down third-seeded Marymount University in the first-ever Atlantic East Conference men's basketball championship, 75-69, to hoist the trophy on its home court. The Griffins and Saints were tight through the whole first half, seeing Marymount take the two-point advantage into the locker room, 33-31. The Saints were led by freshman Xavier Reaves (6'5''-G) and senior Brandon Rogers (6'3''-G) in the first half, both coming off the bench for nine and eight points, respectively, while Gwynedd Mercy's Courtney Cubbage (6'1''-G) shot 70 percent from the floor for 17 points and five rebounds. Cubbage, who was named the tournament's most valuable player, continued the hot hand into the second half for 13 more points to finish the day with a game-high 30 points. He was a big factor in the strength of the offense for the Griffins on the restart, as they got out to a 12-0 start in the second half. Although the Saints remained within striking distance, the quick start by Gwynedd Mercy kept the cushion the rest of the way for the victory. Cubbage was joined by teammates Clayton Wolfe (5'10''-PG) and Rich Dunham (6'1''-G) with double-figure scoring performances, as the two chipped in 18 and 15 points, in that order. Wolfe just missed a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds. For the Saints, Reaves and Rogers led the team with 17 and 14 points, while Reaves also paced the team on the glass with seven rebounds. Both teams will await to see if their seasons continue, as the Griffins look for an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament and Saints hope to continue their season in the ECAC tournament.
