ETBU wins Second Championship-Feb 26, 2023
East Texas Baptist won its second American Southwest Conference Championship in men's basketball by defeating Hardin-Simmons 72-64 at Mayborn Campus Center Saturday night.
The Tigers also won the title in 2015. The team improved to 23-5, which is the most wins for the program since finishing with 28 their other championship campaign. They secure the ASC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship. The selection show will be at 12:00 p.m. on Monday on NCAA.com. It was a gritty back-and-forth game that produced 16 lead changes and 11 ties. ETBU used a 12-0 run to erase an eight-point gap in the first half to build a 34-30 edge. The Cowboys responded to a near seven-minute drought by scoring the final five points in the last minute to take a 35-34 halftime lead. Both teams traded leads most of the second half, but with the score tied at 53 the Tigers went on a 10-2 surge to command the finish. Hardin-Simmons cut the deficit to 66-62 with 1:24 to play, but ETBU's Jayden Williams (5'9''-PG-2001) drilled a three-pointer to push the momentum back to the Tigers. Darry Moore (6'7''-F-2001) was named ASC Tournament Most Valuable Player and led all players with 25 points and 10 rebounds to claim a double-double. He had at least 20 points in all three tournament games and finished with 75. Williams scored 16 points thanks to 4-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc. Ryan Elzy added 10 points. The Tigers shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and 46.7 percent overall. The Tigers finished with a 38-30 advantage on points in the paint. Hardin-Simmons was led by Jason Justice (5'9''-PG) and Calaway Dykes (6'3''-G) with 16 points each. The duo combined for 5-of-7 shooting from the three-point line. Hardin-Simmons made 5-of-8 in the first half, with 12 counting towards 18 points that helped build its biggest lead of the game at 30-22. The Cowboys finished overall 6-of-12 from deep. Steven Quinn (6'2''-F) notched 13 points and was 9-for-10 at the free throw line. Quinn accumulated the most points in the tournament with 78. Austin Brewer (6'10''-C) finished with 10. Will Bartoszek (6'4''-F) grabbed eight rebounds for a team-high. Hardin-Simmons finishes its season at 19-9. The Cowboys ended the season with the most ASC Tournament wins with 23. The previous time these teams met in an ASC Championship Tournament game was the 2017 Quarterfinals, which the Cowboys won 89-80. Hardin-Simmons would win its second title that same year.
