Ozarks Claim First Men's Basketball Title - Mar 15, 2021
Ozarks won its first American Southwest Conference Championship in men's basketball Monday night by defeating Louisiana College 74-72 at Mabee Gymnasium.The Eagles (10-3) surived a last second shot attempt from the Wildcats (11-5), after senior guard Bryson Johnson (5'11''-PG) put UO in the finals with a three-pointer at the buzzer in Sunday's semifinal game against Hardin-Simmons. Ozarks took a 31-26 lead into halftime. The Eagles led by as much as nine early in the second half, but LC manage to tie the game at 50-50 with 8:40 to play. A lay-up by Zach Bobo (6'6''-G) gave Ozarks a 72-65 advantage with 25 seconds left. Wildcat senior guard Kae'Ron Baker (6'2''-G) made the game 74-72 with under two seconds left after making a free throw. His second attempt was rebounded by senior forward KJ Bilbo (6'4''-F), but his putback was off the mark as time ran out. The Eagles shot 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the field and were 9-of-29 from three-point range and 13-of-19 at the line. They also had 37 rebounds, 19 assists, 16 steals, four blocks and 10 turnovers. The Wildcats shot 41.5 perent (27-of-65) overall, 9-of-27 from outside and were 9-of-13 at the stripe. LC had 38 rebounds, 14 assists, five steals, three blocks and nine turnovers. Johnson, the tournament's MVP, posted 25 points with five boards and seven assists to lead the Eagles. Zachary Byrd (6'3''-F) added 19 poiints and eight rebounds and senior Tim Turpin (6'6''-F) had 12 points. Baker led all scorers with 36 points and had five rebounds. Junior center Galen Smith (6'8''-C), Jr. had a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards and senior KJ Bilbo added 10 points and seven rebounds.
