The Salem University women's basketball team (1-6) fell to Davis & Elkins (1-7), 73-60, on Wednesday evening at the McDonnell Center. Despite a strong fourth-quarter comeback attempt, a mid-game deficit proved too large for the Tigers to overcome. Trio Hits Double-Digits for Salem Three Tigers scored in double figures, with junior forward Meilin Guo (5'11''-F) leading the team with 16 points. Guo was efficient on the night, connecting on 7-of-11 field goal attempts.
The Tigers also received solid production from:
Batoul Khaleefah (5'7''-G), who contributed 14 points, including a team-high 2 three-pointers (2-of-5). Khaleefah also pulled down 7 rebounds and dished out 2 assists.
Taja Brown (5'10''-F), who added 11 points, largely thanks to hitting 5-of-7 free throws.
Guo and Nakayla Green anchored the rebounding effort, each finishing with a team-high 8 rebounds. Green was particularly active on the offensive glass, grabbing 6 offensive rebounds. Guo also led the defensive effort with 3 steals. Davis & Elkins held a 14-11 lead after the first quarter and outscored Salem 19-8 in the second to take a 33-19 advantage into halftime. The Senators extended their lead in the third quarter, which saw the deficit balloon to as much as 23 points (29-52) before the Tigers ended the period trailing 57-35. However, Salem refused to quit, putting together its most effective quarter in the final frame. The Tigers poured in 25 points in the fourth quarter alone. This late surge was fueled by hot shooting, as Salem hit 53.85% from the field (7-of-13) and converted 76.92% of its free throws (10-of-13) in the final ten minutes. The effort cut the final margin to 13 points.Salem will be looking to make some improvements next time out as they are set to host the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, December 13th.
