Matt Conway
The Dixie State Trailblazers were unable to overcome a 17-point halftime deficit and dropped their season opener 72-66 to the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos on Saturday. Junior guard Matt Conway (6'7''-F) led the way for Dixie State with 22 points and four rebounds. The Trailblazers, playing at home in Burns Arena, shot poorly, with the team shooting 5-for-25 for just 17 points. Cal Poly took advantage of DSU's missed shots and showed its prowess from behind the arc, nailing seven of its 13 three-pointers in the first half. The shooting disparity put the Trailblazers down big early in the game and the Broncos led 34-17 going into halftime. The Trailblazers woke up on the offensive end in the second half, largely due to their ability to be aggressive and get to the free throw line. The Trailblazers made 15 of their 21 free throws in the second half to cut the Broncos lead to single digits. They would kick it out and hit threes. Pomona is a very good team, very hard team to guard and they're very athletic.' Dixie State head coach Jon Judkins said. "How we got back in the game was we changed our defense and got really aggressive.' With just over three minutes remaining, Dixie State cut the lead to two points at 63-61 on a Conway layup. A 9-3 Cal Poly run in the final minutes, bolstered by a timely three-pointer from Cal Poly's Riley Schaefer (6'5''-G) and closing free throws, sealed the game for the Broncos. Despite the opening loss, Judkins saw positives in the effort the team showed to get back into the game. "I thought we shared the ball better in the second half and found open guys and knocked down shots,' Judkins said. 'I loved the energy and the effort they gave me those last eight minutes and they played their guts out, but you can't play eight minutes to beat a team that good."
