Following a tough opening weekend, the Wildcats came close to making up for it in their home opener Monday night. Tied with three minutes left, Fort Valley State saw victory slip away as Columbus State pulled out the 71-64 men's basketball victory. A pair of Tarrence Evans foul shots at 3:20 gave FVSU (0-3) a slim 62-61 lead. After the Cougars (2-1) answered with two free throws of their own 20 seconds later, the Wildcats missed five-straight from the field and committed a pair of key turnovers to allow the visitors to push in front for good. Senior Jaylon McMillan (6'3''-G) became FVSU's first 20-point scorer of the early season with 20 points on 8 of 15 shooting, including three treys. Newcomer K'Viontae Williams (G) contributed 15 points as the other double-figure scorer and handed out a team-high five assists. Brenton Jordan (C) grabbed nine rebounds as the Wildcats won the glass battle, 45-38. In limited minutes, Shawn Foxbrennen chipped in seven points and had six rebounds. The Cougars took advantage of 19 Wildcats turnovers on the night. Columbus State saw three players reach double digits in Landrius Horton at 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting and 10 rebounds for the lone double-double. FVSU came out strong in the opening half. The home team enjoyed an early 10-4 lead after McMillan's first triple only 4:08 into the night. The Wildcats equaled the same margin two more times with the third coming on a D'Angelo Strickland foul shot, 31-25, at 1:33. Strickland added an offensive putback with nine seconds for the 33-28 halftime lead. Williams helped FVSU to what would be its largest lead of the night only 1:40 into the second stanza with a layup for the 37-30 lead. Columbus State answered with a 10-3 spurt to tie the game at 40-40 at the 15:18 mark. The Cougars would take their lead to as many as five points five times with the last at 58-53 almost eight minutes later. Williams led a 7-0 Wildcat run with five of the points, including an inside jumper to make it 60-58 with 3:49 remaining. FVSU has only a day off until it makes the short trip to Georgia Southwestern for a Wednesday evening, Nov. 14, contest. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
