Delta State University head men's basketball coach Jim Boone announced the hiring of John Redman as the Statesmen's new assistant coach on Thursday. The Spanish Ft., Ala., native comes to the Delta after seven years coaching at the NAIA level, including three years at Spring Hill College, three years at Dalton State College and one year at the University of Mobile. He also spent one season as the head boys' basketball coach at St. Paul's Episcopal School in Mobile, Ala., prior to moving back up to the collegiate coaching ranks. 'We are extremely excited about the addition of John Redman to our coaching staff and the Delta State University family,' said Boone, who is entering his seventh season at the helm of Statesmen Basketball and his 33rd season as a head coach.' John has an incredible reputation as a coach and recruiter, but more importantly as a person of great integrity and character. He came highly recommended by several trusted friends and colleagues and we are most excited about the energy and excitement he will bring to our players and staff. John most importantly aligns with our program's culture and will be a great fit for our staff, the university, and our Cleveland community. We could not be happier to welcome John and his wife Sommer to our basketball family and the Cleveland community.' After graduating from SHC, he accepted a job with Dalton State College in Dalton, Ga., where he played an instrumental role in starting the program from scratch. During its inaugural season in 2013-14, Dalton State finished 26-4 but was ineligible for post-season play. In DSC's second year of existence and the first season of conference and postseason eligibility, the Roadrunners captured the Southern States Athletic Conference regular season championship and won the 2015 NAIA National Championship in Kansas City, Mo. Redman moved back to Mobile accepting the position of head boys' basketball coach at St. Paul's Episcopal School in 2016-17. In his lone year at St. Paul's, Redman was in charge of six teams (5th/6th/7th/8th/JV/Varsity) with a young varsity team that battled injuries all year, finishing 11-12. In, 2017-18, Redman moved back up to the college ranks as an assistant coach at the University of Mobile. Redman earned his bachelors degree from Spring Hill College in 2013, where he transitioned from a student-athlete to assistant coach, spending three years working for the Badgers. Redman replaces Bob Szorc who left to accept the assistant men's basketball coaching position at NCAA Division I Presbyterian College last month.
