Lake Superior State University men's basketball coach Steve Hettinga has announced the appointment of Devon Mulry as assistant coach and JV head coach. Mulry, who spent the last seven years (2011-2018) with the University of Michigan men's basketball program, will serve as the second assistant and the JV head coach with fellow assistant coach, Ted Stowe, being promoted to the No.1 position. 'We are very excited to welcome Devon to our family,' said Hettinga, who enter his 12th season at the helm of the Laker men's basketball program. 'He comes to us with very high credentials having been a part of (U-of-M head coach, John Beilein's) staff the last several years and brings unique experiences for someone his age. I look forward to learning from him.' During his time with the Wolverines, Mulry began as a student manager for the team where he spent two seasons before being promoted to the head manager position for his junior and senior years. As the head manager, Mulry was responsible for supervising all 18 student managers, analyzing and editing game contracts and assisting with team logistics. After earning his bachelor's degree in History and Political Science from U-of-M in 2015, Mulry served as the team's Graduate Operations Intern for the 2015-16 season where he helped manage day-to-day operations including budgetary and scheduling work. Mulry was also instrumental in organizing and staffing the 'John Beilein Basketball Camps' held throughout the summer. During the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, Mulry was promoted to a graduate assistant coach where worked directly with Coach Beilein and the assistant coaching staff to analyze game film, prepare scouting reports and game plans and organize recruiting schedules. In his two seasons as a GA, the Wolverines captured back-to-back Big Ten Championships, consecutive Sweet Sixteen appearances in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Championship game last season (2018), falling to Villanova, 79-62. 'I am very excited to be joining the Lake Superior State family,' said Mulry. 'Coach Hettinga has established an incredible program here at Lake State and I look forward to contributing toward the program's continued success. I believe my experience at Michigan, especially the last two years as Graduate Assistant, has prepared me well for this opportunity and I can't wait to get started.' Mulry completed a Master of Management degree (2016) and a Master of Arts in Higher Educations during his three years as a postgrad in Ann Arbor. A native of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mulry graduated from Caledonia High School in 2011.
