West Alabama won the Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Championship, its first tournament title since 1982, after defeating fourth-seeded West Georgia, 67-65, on Sunday at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala.
With the result, the second-seeded Tigers also earned the conference's automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball South Region Championship. The full field will be announced tonight at 10 pm CT at NCAA.com. Justin Allison (6'0''-PG-1999) led the UWA offense with a team-best 18 points, en route to earning Most Outstanding Player and all-tournament honors. The Tigers' Kuran Garner (6'1''-G) was also selected to the all-tournament team. West Georgia finished with four double-figure scorers, led by all-tournament selection Zawdie Jackson (5'11''-PG) who had a game-high 19 points. The Wolves also had Michael Zabetakis (6'5''-G) and Jalen Sasser (6'7''-F) named to the tournament team after both finished with 12 points. Camron Donatlan (6'3''-G) scored 13 points. NOTABLE TEAM STATS West Georgia converted 43.4 percent (23-53) of shots from the floor, while West Alabama knocked down 41.7 percent (20-48). UWA made 6-of-13 attempts from three-point distance, while UWG made 6-of-19. The Tigers made 21-of-25 (.840) attempts from the free throw stripe, while the Wolves converted 13-of-16 (.813).
