Purdue survives overtime scare at Penn State, 99-90 - Feb 1, 2019

Matt Painter
No. 17 Purdue needed overtime to finally overcome Penn State on Thursday night in State College, Penn. In its first outing since a convincing win over No. 6 Michigan State, the Boilermakers struggled to pull away from a Nittany Lions team that has yet to notch a win in Big Ten play. Purdue won its sixth straight to improve to 15-6 overall and 7-2 in league play. A quick review of the stat sheet is pretty revealing as to how the host Nittany Lions were able to push the Boilermakers to overtime. Penn State won the battle on the boards by nine and attempted 20 more free throws than Purdue. "I thought Penn State played well, shot the ball well," Purdue head coach Matt Painter said. "They did a better job rebounding the ball and got a lot more possessions. Both teams did a good job taking care of the basketball, but we just put them on the free throw line too much. We have to do a better job of making our opponent earn it and make tough shots, especially tough twos over us." Penn State took advantage of the free opportunities, hitting 30 of 41 from the charity stripe. It also converted the offensive boards into points, outscoring Purdue 23-10 on second-chance points. While the game was close throughout the second half and eventually into overtime, that wasn't the case from the start. Purdue grabbed a quick lead and pushed the margin to double figures six minutes in when Carsen Edwards (6'1''-G-98) sank a fast-break three-pointer. The Boilermakers lead by 17 with 5:30 to play in the opening frame, but a 9-0 Penn State run sparked the Nittany Lions comeback. The lead shrank to just three until Aaron Wheeler (6'9''-F-98) hit a three-pointer just before the break for a six-point advantage at the half. "It's human behavior when a team gets up by 17 points that the other team is going to come storming back," Painter said. "The other team is going to relax a little bit, even though you don't intentionally do that. It happens in a lot of games, especially when the home team gets down. I thought Penn State had a lot of fight. We were very fortunate to knock down a 35-footer at the buzzer to be up six." Carsen Edwards connected on a career-high eight three-pointers to spark a 38-point performance. He hit 12 of 24 field goal attempts and all six of his free throw attempts. Edwards layup with five seconds to play forced the overtime. He also helped highlight the overtime period with a four-point play.

St. John's Hires Former Arkansas Head Coach Mike Anderson - 7 days ago
The St. John's Red Storm have hired former Arkansas head coach Mike Anderson for the same position. The move comes after former head coach and St. John's alumni Chris Mullin decided to step down from the position. The former Arkansas head coach was fired by the program and eventually replaced by Nevada's Eric Musselman . The 59-year-old head coach will take over a St. John's program in disarray and will need a serious overhaul. There are some questions about how he fits the culture with t...   [read more]

What to Expect From the FIBA 2019 Games - 13 days ago
The International Basketball Federation (FIDA) will be hosting the World Cup this year in China from the 31st of August until the end of the play offs on the 15th of September. The build up to selecting the 32 teams to compete was brutal enough and judging from the teams selected we can see the winning potential and may even bet tempted to bet on the underdog at NoviBet. But with the intense build up which led to the final window of qualifiers, we are waiting in avid anticipation for the...   [read more]
