Brelove
On Thursday, the St. John's women's basketball program announced the signing of rising senior Curteeona Brelove (6'2''-F), who transfers to the Red Storm after a solid junior campaign at Virginia Commonwealth. Brelove will have one year of eligibility remaining after playing three years at VCU. Per NCAA transfer regulations, Brelove must complete one full academic year of residency before competing for St. John's. 'Curteeona will bring us an experienced front court player who has versatility from all areas on the floor,' Head Coach Joe Tartamella said. 'We are very happy to have her as part of our program.' The 6-2 forward appeared in 29 out of the Rams' 31 games last season, making 13 starts. Brelove averaged 8.3 points in 22.0 minutes per game. On the glass, Brelove brought down 6.6 boards per game, which led the team last season. Brelove, a native of Malone, Fla., has shown improvements during her three years at VCU as both her points and rebounds per game have gone up each season. 'I decided to come to St. John's because of the team's style of play and how down to Earth everyone was.' Brelove said. 'I love how they run the floor and how everyone is so versatile. I focused on how the post players can step outside and knock down shots, as well as make back-to-the-basket moves. The team and coaches were very straightforward and they made me feel like I was already part of the family, and that spoke volumes to me.' After a solid start to the 2016-17 campaign, Brelove broke out for back-to-back double-doubles against Wake Forest and Brown in late December. Brelove went for 16 points and 13 rebounds against the Demon Deacons before scoring 19 points and grabbing 14 boards against the Bears. The following game, Brelove scored a season-high 20 points on 9-of-17 shooting against La Salle. Overall, Brelove posted 11 double-digit scoring performances and registered three double-doubles on the year. Prior to VCU, Brelove was a three-time Florida Association of Basketball Coaches All-State player and a two-time league Player of the Year.
