The Cape Breton Highlanders have done something no other team in the National Basketball League of Canada has done this season - beat the Moncton Magic. The Sydney-based Highlanders handed the Magic (10-1) their first loss of the season, snapping the club's 10-game winning streak to start the season with a 114-84 victory at Centre 200 in Sydney on Friday. Bruce Massey (6'3''-G-90, college: Middle Tenn.St.) had a game-high 25 points for the Highlanders, along with five rebounds and 12 assists in front of 1,049 fans, according to the league website. Aaron Redpath (6'4''-G-92, college: McMaster) also provided offense for Cape Breton, dropping 19 points, while Kenny Jones (6'6''-PF-84, college: Kentucky St.) and recently signed Deshaunt Walker (5'11''-PG-91, college: SF Austin) chipped in with 16 points in the win. Doug Herring Jr. (6'3''-G-87, college: Utica) Jr. had 20 points for the Magic, while Isaiah Tate (6'4''-G-89, college: George Mason) netted 19 points off the bench for the New Brunswick-based squad. Cape Breton held a 28-24 lead after the first quarter, before Moncton stormed back to score 29 points in the second, sending the contest to halftime tied 53-53. The Highlanders would answer, netting 31 points in the third quarter and 30 points in the final frame, limiting the Magic to a combined total of 31 points over the final two quarters. Cape Breton had a 51.2 per cent field goal percentage, while Moncton was 42.7 per cent. The Highlanders (5-4) will return to action on Sunday when they host the 11th place Saint John Riptide at 2 p.m. at Centre 200.

Third straight loss has Bolt's coach at a loss - 2 days ago
Coach Elliott Etherington was at his wit's end after the London Lightning dropped their third straight game, falling 107-98 to the Saint John Riptide Sunday at Budweiser Gardens. The exasperated coach increasingly is growing tired of explaining how the Lightning keep losing in the exact same way. The Bolts (8-11), who are in last place in the National Basketball League of Canada's Central Division, lost their previous two games in overtime, 122-119 Saturday night to the Express in Windsor...   [read more]

Magic spoil Thomas's Hurricanes debut - 3 days ago
Most eyes were on Halifax Hurricanes newcomer Terry Thomas (6'4''-G/F-91, college: Ottawa) at Scotiabank Centre. But it was his former NBL Canada team which stole the show Saturday night. The Moncton Magic (13-7) battled back from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter and pulled out a thrilling 114-111 overtime victory for their fifth win in as many tries over the Hurricanes (9-9). It was the first game in a Halifax uniform for East Preston's Thomas, the former Magic guard who joined t...   [read more]

Isaiah Johnson joins Sudbury Five - 4 days ago
ISAIAH JOHNSON Sudbury Five (NBL Canada) agreed terms with 24-year old American center Isaiah Johnson (208-134kg-94, college: Akron). He played last summer at Illinois BC (The Basketball Tournament) in the U.S. The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others Johnson's team won MAC East Division Regular Season for two years in a row (2016 and 2017). He was also voted All-MAC Player of the Year and All-MAC 1st Team in 2016 and 2017 at his college time. Johnson attended Uni...   [read more]
