London Lightning win National Basketball League title - Mar 26, 2012

DeAnthony Bowden (6'1''-G-80, college: Creighton) scored 28 points and had four rebounds and five assists on Sunday to lead the London Lightning to a 116-92 victory over the Halifax Rainmen in the inaugural National Basketball League of Canada championship series.

The Lightning win the best-of-five series 3-2.

Gabe Freeman (6'6''-F-85, college: Costa Mesa JC) was named playoff MVP while scoring 22 points and pulling down nine rebounds for London. Eddie Smith (6'2''-G-83, college: Ill.-Springfield) had 20 points and seven assists for the Lightning.

Christoph Hagensieker (6'6''-F/C-80) led Halifax with 21 points, five rebounds and three assists.

'What a great finish to an outstanding championship series, outstanding playoffs and an exciting regular season', NBL Canada commissioner John Kennedy said in a statement. 'I know I speak for the entire league, when I say were very pleased with the success weve had this year and look forward to even bigger accomplishments in the future.'

Londons head coach Michael Ray Richardson was named coach of the year after leading the Lightning to a 28-8 record.

'It was a great game with an incredible crowd, what we did was protect our home court and its an unbelievable feeling', Richardson said.

Team Haywood wins inaugural NBL Canada All-Star Game - Apr 2, 2012

Team Haywood won the National Basketball League of Canada Rogers All-Star Game by a score of 164-155 in front of 2,603 fans.

Leading Team Haywood was the Oshawa Powers Brandon Robinson (6'6''-F-89, college: Clayton St.) with 38 points. Robinson was named the Most Valuable Player of the All-Star game. The Moncton Miracles Trayvon Lathan (6'7''-G-84, college: Chowan) had 27 points in Team Haywoods win, followed by Tyrone Levett (6'5''-F-80, college: Alabama St.) with 24.

Winning MVP of anything is a really great feeling, but winning the honour among players as talented as those we saw here today is extra special, said Robinson, Participating in All-Star Weekend was a great opportunity for me.

The Halifax Rainmens Lawrence Wright (6'5''-F-84, college: Bradley) led Team Smith with 29 points, followed by captain Eddie Smith (6'2''-G-83, college: Ill.-Springfield) with 19. NBL Canada MVP Gabe Freeman (6'6''-F-85, college: Costa Mesa JC) chipped in with 18 points, while Morgan Lewis added 16.
