The conversation about expanding the NBA is heating up again. It has become a common theme for years now, as the league looks to expand, and such an expansion would be a huge financial boost for the cities that get an arena.

Spencer Haywood weighed in on the matter, and his voice is one of the best suited to address the plans and their potential benefits: Haywood, a Hall of Famer, Olympic gold medalist, and former Seattle SuperSonics star.

Haywood's Opinion

Haywood stated that: "Seattle's done everything right—the arena, the infrastructure, the fans never left. And Vegas is a natural fit for today's NBA". It's a sentiment that most fans can agree with, as the consensus is that the expansion isn't just welcome, it's overdue. Some of the best anonymous sports betting sites have already provided odds on the NBA moving to Seattle. These sites enable players to place quick and anonymous wagers on any outcome of a sports event.

Haywood is someone with experience in innovation within the NBA. He fought legal battles that paved the way for early-entry players, and he helped establish basketball culture in Seattle during his tenure with the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1970s.

Seattle SuperSonics: A Team that Never Left Fans' Hearts

Seattle was once home to the SuperSonics, one of the most beloved teams in the NBA. It was founded in 1967 and reached its peak in 1979, when it won the NBA Championship. Haywood was among those who made it happen, since he averaged 24 points per game at the time.

In 2008, the team was relocated to Oklahoma City. It caused a huge controversy among the fans, and the bond between them and the SuperSonics never really broke. There are grassroots campaigns in Seattle to bring the team back, and the necessary infrastructure is already in place.

Las Vegas: The Rising Star of U.S. Sports

An NBA team in Seattle would be a return to an already established tradition, while creating one in Las Vegas symbolizes a look towards the future. Over the past decade, the city has emerged as the premier center for entertainment and an athletic hub. This is especially impressive as it was a sports no-go zone before that.

The NBA already has some roots within Las Vegas. It hosts the summer league and features the G League Ignite team. Experts from Webopedia also claim that the city is an ideal spot for the high-tech aspects of modern sports.

Why is this the Perfect Time?

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has discussed plans for expansion, but an official timeline has not been announced yet. Currently, there are 30 teams evenly split among the conferences, and many believe the officials are waiting for the next media rights deal before proceeding with expansion.

An expansion will lead to increased revenue, TV exposure in new markets, and a wider fan base - all of which are what the NBA is looking for.

Fans and Players Agree

Fans are already on board with the expansion, both in Seattle and in Las Vegas. Sonics' nostalgia is stronger than ever, and their merchandise continues to sell well. Las Vegas has been sold out during every Summer Season, and the players and executives have started to notice, too.

Many current NBA stars have played in Seattle-based pro-am games during the offseason, hosted by former Sonic Jamal Crawford.

"It's not just old-timers like me pushing for this," Haywood laughed. "The young guys want it too."

Challenges Ahead

The idea of expanding the NBA isn't without its challenges, but most of them aren't deal breakers. There are logistical and financial issues that need to be resolved. This includes: creating expansion draft rules, rebalancing conferences, securing ownership groups, and integrating new media contracts. Industry insiders favor both Las Vegas and Seattle, as they excel in addressing these issues.

Mexico City and Louisville are mentioned as other options, and there will be efforts to expand to these cities instead, often with equally compelling arguments. However, given Seattle's history and the huge presence of Las Vegas in the entertainment industry, they are the favorites.

To Sum Up

Seattle and Las Vegas are likely to be the next additions to the NBA, which is poised for expansion. Fans are very excited about Seattle, as the city already had a franchise – the Supersonics- and many want to see it make a comeback. Las Vegas is, in many ways, a perfect city for a team, and it already hosts the Summer Series.

There are also some issues to resolve first, and the expansion will be a huge logistical challenge. However, given that both the fans and the NBA are ready, chances are it will happen soon enough.
