If there is one person who has influenced the NBA and basketball as a sport in general in the last 30 years, it has to be LeBron James. Compared to the one and only Michael Jordan since his high school days, and expected to become the best to ever play the game, in many ways, he did. “The Chosen One”, “The King”, call him what you want, but he has the accolades, records, and trophies to back it up. In the league for well over 22 years, he is as good as ever and aging like the finest of wines. Coincidence that he is a wine connoisseur with thousands of bottles in his cellar? Probably, but it hardly matters.

James has been synonymous with basketball for almost a quarter of the century, and entering the 2025/2026 season, he is as hungry for success and as poised as ever to once again prove that if Father Time cannot be defeated, he will be the one who came the closest. But what will happen when LeBron James finally retires, and could this very season next year be his last? It certainly seems like he will play forever. He does, after all, play with his son on the same team, another first for him as nobody else even came close to doing it.

It is a testament to his longevity, fitness, love, and passion for the game, and the unparalleled talent and physical prowess he has been blessed with. Still, this upcoming season in Purple and Gold could also be his last for the Lakers, if not literally the last in his career. In this article, we talk about these possibilities as we look into what is next for LBJ, the Lakers, and the NBA, both in the fall of 2025 and beyond. If you are a fan of the game, read on, as it could help your NBA betting decisions for next year.

Will LeBron Leave the Lakers after Next Season?

The 40-year-old superstar is currently on a two-year $104 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers and has a player option for the 2025/2026 season. As things stand right now, not even those in his immediate circle know what he is going to do next year. Last season, he remained as efficient as ever and was one of the best players in the league with 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game. Lakers traded Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic in the middle of the season, and next year it will be the young Slovenian’s first full season with the LA team. This, plus the fact that Bronny James is with the team, bodes well for LeBron’s future in Tinseltown as he has a fellow superstar to run the game and his eldest to share the experience. Will he leave all that behind in favor of another team? Probably now, but what will he do then?

Since the 2020 bubble title, the Lakeshow suffered three first-round exits in their last four playoff trips. If LeBron can either accept the player option and stay with the team, or opt out and become a free agent, and then re-sign on a longer contract with the Lakers, or with another franchise. There is a deadline involved here, as The King has until June 29 before his player option expires. Everything points to the team’s front office wanting to surround him with win-now players for one final push alongside Doncic.

Speaking of the Lakers’ chances, are they equipped for a title run with him and Luka? The blockbuster trade did its thing for the offense, but the team lacks length, strength, and defense. LA has its new star for the next decade, and LeBron will not be there for all of it. Still, the 2026 season could see Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, and Jaxon Hayes making the starting five, which is not enough for a title. It is worthy of playoffs, but running into Minnesota again or, god forbid, the OKC Thunder, would spell disaster. James needs to work out a plan with Rob Pelinka and JJ Reddick and get some much-needed help this offseason if he plans to stay for a year or two more. He has shown distrust with some of the decisions the franchise has made, and they will need to patch things up if they want another title.

If he ends up leaving, it will probably be back to the east again, considering how rough the west has become yet again. Between the Nuggets, Thunder, Wolves, Warriors, and Rockets, it is a more difficult option than the injured Celtics, the streaky Knicks, the overachieving Pacers, and the unproven Cavaliers. The storybook ending would be going back to Cleveland once again and finishing the career in his home state, where it all started. However, James already went there once, won a title, and left again, so would it make sense to do it for the second time, and would he even be welcome this time around? The Cavs have an amazing team and everything they need for a title. They were the Stake favorites to win it all for most of the season. They fell short this year, but next year they will surely be even better. If they reach the finals, it would mean they do not need him, especially if they win it all. If he were to come, it would be at a hefty contract discount for the ring-chasing final year of the legendary career.

The Dream Matchup of Legends

For several seasons now, we have been listening to the current greats like James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant wanting to play together on a team. They did so with the 2024 Paris Olympics, and it was amazing to see. They did it in the All-Star game. But could they do it in the league for a joint title run that would capture the headlines? Let’s face it, James is a super-team, big-three savant. Durant has done it before several times, and Steph had him on his GSW. They are among the oldest players and still dominate the league. So why not join forces on a team and risk it all for glory? But where would they do it?

The Golden State Warriors attempted to trade for James last year, and Durant was already there. LeBron wanted to remain on the Lakers, but will he have the same thing in mind should they lose in the playoffs again next season? The craziest thing that could happen would be this trio playing together in 2026/2027 on a team looking to make a title run before going into a rebuild, but we will have to wait and see. It is definitely something the fans would love to see. GSW would be the safest bet for it. One thing is certain: basketball gambling would be dominated by the bets on that team to win it all, and one of them to take home the Finals MVP.
