The Washington Wizards are making big changes. The team has parted ways with long-time team president Ernie Grunfeld . In a statement, Wizards owner Ted Leonsis said the move was made because the team's performance did not meet expectations. He thanked Grunfeld for his contributions to the franchise over the years. 'We did not meet our stated goals of qualifying for the playoffs this season and, despite playing with injuries to several key players, we have a culture of accountability and a responsibility of managing to positive outcomes,' said Leonsis. 'I wish to thank Ernie for his service to the Washington Wizards. He and his family have been great leaders in our community and have worked tirelessly to make us a top NBA franchise.' Leonsis specifically cited the team's failure to make the playoffs as a reason Grunfeld was let go. Coming into Tuesday, the Wizards were 32-46. The 63-year-old Grunfeld had been with the organization since 2003. The Wizards compiled a 568-724 record under Grunfeld. The team performed well under Grunfeld initially, making the playoffs in four straight seasons early in his tenure. The Wizards only advanced past the first round once during that period. After a few poor seasons, Grunfeld was able to build another winner in Washington, D.C. The Wizards made the Conference Semifinals three times between 2013 and 2017. They never advanced past that round under Grunfeld. With Grunfeld out, the team will hand over operations to Tommy Shepard, who is currently the vice president of basketball operations. The Wizards plan to interview candidates to replace Grunfeld. Shepard is being considered for that position.
