Erik
Spoelstra
Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra dug deep into his bag of tricks in this one. He not only again went to zone defense, but double-teamed James Harden (6'5''-SG-89, college: Arizona St.) from the alignment. He gave Hassan Whiteside his first fourth-quarter minutes since Dec. 2. And he turned to Tyler Johnson during some of the game's biggest moments. In the end, after an errant 3-point attempt by Eric Gordon (6'4''-G-88, college: Indiana) just before the final buzzer, it moved the Heat to their first three-game winning streak of the season with a 101-99 decision Thursday night over the Houston Rockets at AmericanAirlines Arena. "Thankfully, he missed," Spoelstra said of the open attempt, on a night his team smothered the Rockets to .354 shooting. Josh Richardson (6'6''-G-93, college: Tennessee) led the Heat with 22 points, with Harden pacing the Rockets with 35. It was a wild finish, made all the more harrowing by the Heat's 20-of-34 foul shooting. "Now we're talking about five games out of seven where we've held our opponent under 100," Spoelstra said of the Heat's reemerging defense. "This is the first period where we're really defend for two weeks straight." With the Heat down 16 early, then up 11 early in the fourth, Dwyane Wade (6'4''-G-82, college: Marquette) made a pair of free throws for a 101-96 Heat lead with 1:20 to play, only to see Gordon convert a 3-pointer to draw Houston within 101-99 with 37.8 seconds left. But when Wade was off in the lane on a floater with 4.6 seconds to play, it put Houston in position to win or tie off a timeout with 3.8 seconds left. That's when Gordon was off and the Heat extended their winning streak. "We have to play defense to win games," Richardson said, with the Heat holding on despite their wretched foul shooting and .387 percentage from the field.
