Aaron
McCarthy
Eurobasket.com had a pleasure to chat with former American coach of Ahli Bahraini Club coach Aaron McCarthy who finished the regular season in the 2nd position .. then what's happened ? That's what we are going to know in the following interview.

Coach Aaron good day, how are you?
Greetings to Eurobasket and thanks for thsis interview, I'm fine thanks.

After 25 years of coaching in Europe, What led you to come to work in the middle east and rather more in Bahrain?
I wanted to experience the basketball world in this region, Bahrain seemed like a good place to start.

You have spent with Ahli Club 6 months, how do you evaluate your experience with the club?
With my team it was very good. My goal was to change the way they played in the past, stronger defense and more collective play and it worked. Even with all the changes the management made within our team, 4 Imports and the Suspension of Hussein Shaker for one month, we still finished in top two, I'm very proud of my players.
In regards to the management, very disappointing.

How did you receive the news of your dismissal from Al Ahli team, and what was your reaction after you heard the decision specially that you finished the regular season in the 2nd position?
The manager Hussein Madan sent a person to my flat to tell me I was fired after last game in second round of regular season, no reason was given to me for this action. The management is very unprofessional in Ahli so it didn't surprise me.

Coach you have been dismissed from coaching the team since Feb 6th and you left Bahrain by 7th March, Why??
Upon my release on Feb 6th, no reason was given to me, only that my contract would be respected on the 7th in full.
Unfortunately this was not the case as nothing was prepared by manager Hussein Madan, the club took no contact with me or my agent to resolve this matter. On my agent advice I stayed until contract would be respected. I spent 30 days waiting … Fiba would be last avenue.

Full month of waiting!? How did you spend this 1 month?

I spent my time with friends as much as possible. A lot of sun and swimming, and drinking a lot of coffee with players from my team as well as players from different teams. The club wasn't handling my situation at all so I tried to make the best of it

You are professional coach with big and long experience in Europe, can I ask you if you have even been treated in a non-professional way like what happened with you in Al Ahli?
In almost 30 years of coaching, I have never been treated in this way, the management chose all imports and fire all… was never asked my opinion, just to coach team.
very difficult to build a team under these conditions.

So you are not the first one this year who have been treated in a non-professional way?!
No, I'm not the first. My first import salary was cut 50% after our first game against Muharraq which we won, he played next three games which we won they fired him.
Second import played two games and left.
Third import was fired after 5 games, he had to leave his apartment and club put him in a bad hotel and took away his car, he still waits for his money almost two months along with, our cars have been turned off while driving because club doesn't pay bills, no one from club informs us so they are putting our lives at risk.

You relation was bad with the club, how is your relation with the players?
First let me say I didn't have bad relations with the club. I respected all members and did my job in leading Al Ahli to the top two in competition.
The manager as well as others however showed lack of respect for me and my position as head coach, the made poor decisions that affected my team without consulting me (Change 4 imports and suspend Hussein Shaker for 30 days). Obviously, no coach would be happy with this.
With regards to my players, nothing but my full respect for them. They stayed focused and worked hard everyday, despite everything the management did they became a 'real team', one that played for each other instead of playing for themselves. Extremely proud of them.

After your experience with Al Ahli, if you receive a good offer from another team in Al Bahrain will you come back in the future?
I would definitely consider it.. Bahrain is great country, and I have made some true friends, If I put the Ahli management aside, I have been treated very well by the people in Bahrain .

How do you evaluate the League in Bahrain? and what are the differences between basketball in Bahrain and basketball in Europe?
The league in Bahrain need to improve, more focus need to be put on developing the youth players for the future of the league, in Europe teams put much effort in developing the youth, the managements are very professional for most clubs, I can't speak about speak about managements with other clubs, Only Ahli…

Is not something weird that we see the coaches of teams which finished the regular season in 2nd and 3rd positions were dismissed? 'We talk about Al Muharraq & Al Ahli'
I never have seen or heard this happening in any Country.. This is a poor reflection on management.

What is the main problem in Bahraini basketball? and how do you think they can improve?
I think if the mentality of the people who run the clubs and make decisions doesn't change.. Bahrain will continue on an unstable level. If Players and Coaches are not respected by the people who run the club nothing will change.

Who will win the league title this season?
Manama is clearly the favorite.

Who is the best player in Bahraini league ? Local and Import
Marcel Jones is playing very well in Al Rifaa since his arrival.
Best Bahraini player for me is Hussein Shaker, he did everything I asked of him to improve the 'Team'. He sacrificed for good of team which made us very strong.. much respect for him and Hesham Sarhan our two leaders.

What are your plans for the future?
Look forward to being with my family again and wait for good situation to coach in the future.

Thank you Coach for this interesting interview, anything you want to add?
I would add that the Ahli club must change the way they treat people, local players, imports, coaches and also people who work within organization.
Bahrain wants good basketball reputation in the region, Al Ahli should want the same for themselves.
