CourtKings capture West, look for championship repeat - Jul 3, 2017

Raijon Kelly
Facing arguably their stiffest challenge of the season, the Cedar Valley CourtKings survived and are now one win away from securing a Midwest Basketball League repeat. Anthony James (6'0''-PG-89, college: N.Iowa) converted a three-point play to kick-start a critical 8-0 run, and the CourtKings kept their perfect season alive with a 107-98 win over the Minnesota Rangers in the West Division finals Sunday at the Cedar Valley SportsPlex. After the two teams traded the lead three times early in the fourth quarter, James helped to permanently turn the tide Cedar Valley's way. With the CourtKings up 89-86, he grabbed a loose ball and made a layup with contact, then dropped in a free throw. James, who scored nine of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, had a critical fourth-quarter three-point play for the second night in a row. He made a similar big shot Saturday with Cedar Valley clinging to a three-point lead against the Minnesota Broncos in the semifinals. Raijon Kelly (6'4''-G-93, college: Angelo St.), who scored a team-high 21 points, capped the rally with a deep 3-pointer. After hitting just one triple the night before, the CourtKings were much more efficient from deep Sunday, hitting seven. The CourtKings are now just one win away from completing a perfect season. They face East Division champion Fort Wayne, which topped Dayton 111-105 in the East final, next Sunday. 'I'm at a loss for words,' Coach Michael Mohlis said after the game. 'The sacrifices the guys put in, (team owner Gary) Rima puts in, my assistants ... It's just an unbelievable feeling for my guys. They put in so much hard work, they sacrifice so much for the team. It's not an I, it's all about winning.' To hear some members of the team tell it, it wasn't always a certainty that would be the case. 'At the beginning of the year, I thought we had some immaturity issues and we were going to have a lot of individuals,' said Andre Hicks, who chipped in 20 points. 'But right away we started playing like a team. We had young guys step up right away. This group figured it out.' James says playing for the perfect season was never a high priority, but now that it's squarely within reach, he sees it as a great way to close what has been a terrific year.'We're undefeated so we're playing for something different,' James said. 'After you get 5-, 6-0 and then 10-0, it kind of sets that pedestal for us. Hopefully we continue that until next weekend.' The title game will be played at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday on the campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. The CourtKings topped Fort Wayne 108-101 in their lone regular-season meeting on May 6.

The Midwest Basketball League is starting to gain momentum during the offseason with a lot of activity among teams taking place. What could possibly be the biggest news so far is Dunk Kingz star Issac White will be making his way to Minnesota to play with The Eagan Bulldogs. Look for business to pick up in the Twin Cities as this high flyer will be looking to put on a show in many ways without just flying through the air. White has developed more than just a dunker, but can also dial it u...   [read more]

Gaston Diedhiou (6'10''-F-93) - yes, that Gaston Diedhiou - is a basketball champion. The recent Golden Gophers graduate scored 11 points in the Midwest Basketball League final Sunday afternoon to help his TC Elite squad win a nailbiter 106-104 over the Fort Wayne Vision at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn. Diedhiou, who finished a four-year Gophers career over the winter, landed with the Elite thanks to current teammate Elijah Sabah, a Twin Cities native who was good friends w...   [read more]

The stage is set for the 2018 MBL Championship - 6 months ago
The Ft Wayne Vision will be headed into this game representing the State Of Indiana. They made it this far by knocking off the Knights and Lakers in back to back days. Last season the Vision had to go against Cedar Valley now it's a team that can get out and run the floor from start to finish as well. Look for Reggie Lytle (6'2''-G-91, college: MCC-Penn Valley), Crews, Antonio Cannon (6'0''-PG-92, college: Indiana Tech) and Wilson to try and get going early.
