It wasn't always pretty, but the Cedar Valley CourtKings made enough plays on both ends of the court to move one game closer to a championship repeat in the Midwest Basketball League. Five players scored in double figures and the CourtKings advanced to the West Division finals with a 114-98 win over the Minnesota Broncos Saturday at the Cedar Valley SportsPlex. The CourtKings looked to have things firmly in hand heading into the fourth quarter. Up just five at the half, they used a big third quarter run to stretch their lead to as many as 20 points. But the Broncos, who entered the night just 7-8, didn't go away, opening the final period on a 15-2 run to get within 85-82. Needing a big play to shift momentum, Cedar Valley got just that from Anthony James (6'0''-PG-89, college: N.Iowa). Following two Alex Houston (6'5''-C/F-94, college: Mt.Mercy) free throws, James got a friendly roll while drawing contact, then converted a three-point play. He then hit a runner on the CourtKings' ensuing possession to push the lead back to double figures. Minnesota continued to battle, but was never able to close the gap below six the rest of the way. Houston led the way with 24 points, with James chipping in 19. Awaiting the CourtKings in today's 6:30 p.m. West final at the SportsPlex are the Minnesota Rangers. The Rangers, who the CourtKings defeated in the inaugural Midwest League championship game a year ago, advanced with a thrilling 110-108 win over the Chicago Fury in Saturday's other semifinal.

After five weeks of play in the 26-team Midwest Basketball League just four teams remain unbeaten. Fort Wayne Ballers move to 5-0 - 24 days ago
The Fort Wayne Bubba Ballers have been running through the MBL East Division as of late posting a perfect 5-0 record. On Saturday the Ballers made the trip down to Muncie to take on the Indiana Dream. In what was suppose to be a close game Fort Wayne used a balanced attack to send the Dream in lala land with a 127-109 rout. In order to improve to 6-0 the Ballers will have to do it on the road in one of the most hostile environments in the MBL against the Chicago Fury   [read more]
