Former St. Joseph boys basketball coach Dave Turco lands college job - Sep 5, 2018

Dave Turco, a New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame mentor who is among the state's most highly respected coaches, has been named Middlesex County College's head men's basketball coach. "I am excited about the opportunity to coach in college," Turco said. "It is always something that I wanted to pursue. There were quite a few jobs in the past that piqued my interest but the timing or situation just didn't seem right." Owner of a 448-121 career record during a combined 21 seasons at St. Joseph, Carteret and South Brunswick high schools, Turco is the only coach in Greater Middlesex Conference history to win five consecutive league tournament crowns (2010-14) and the only coach in St. Joseph's storied history to win a Non-Public A championship, claiming three such titles in succession from 2012-14. Turco helped groom Karl-Anthony Towns, the first overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft, and Wade Baldwin, selected in the first round with the 17th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. On Sunday, after learning of Turco's hiring at Middlesex County College, Towns tweeted that Turco was "the best coach I've ever had the honor (of) playing for," adding that his former mentor "deserves everything and more!" Towns played for John Calipari at the University of Kentucky and is currently one of the NBA's best players, enjoying a stellar career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, who Tom Thibodeau coaches. Turco inherits a Blue Colts squad that finished 13-16 (three of the team's losses were in overtime) and averaged 81.5 points per game. 'He's a great fit and a great hire,' Middlesex County College Athletics Director Derrick Johnson said. 'My philosophy of athletics is really bringing Middlesex back to being recognized as a high-caliber athletics department and athletics program. I think 'Turk's' hire gives us a great start. I think what he brings to the table for Middlesex is definitely exposure.' "I am thrilled to remain working in Middlesex County and look forward to continuing the relationships I have had with all the GMC coaches and other top high school coaches in the area," Turco said. "I know that if we work together that Middlesex County College basketball will once again be a program that people respect and want to be a part of." Turco won 20 or more games in each of his 12 seasons at St. Joseph (2004-17), which was ranked among the Top 10 in the Star Ledger's final statewide rankings seven times in the last decade. He compiled a 285-59 career record at St. Joseph and made 10 consecutive conference tournament finals appearances. Turco coached 11 of the school's 15 1,000-point scorers. He guided St. Joseph to the school's only Tournament of Champions title. His resume includes 15 division titles, 10 sectional finals appearances and a Central Group II championship. 'The (search) committee did a good job selecting him and recruiting him to the position,' said Johnson, who was announced as Middlesex County College's athletics director on Aug. 23. 'In talking with 'Turk' we both have the same philosophy about academics. It's not just about growing athletes, but growing student-athletes into young men.' "It was important to me to come on board to Middlesex County College at the same time as the new AD Derrick Johnson," Turco said. "Mr. Johnson and I share the same vision and desire to have our players not only succeed on the court but also in the classroom. My goal is to help all the young men I come in contact with and have them in a better place after spending one or two seasons with us." Middlesex County College opens the 2018-19 season at home on Nov. 3 against Carolina Christian College at noon. "With my appointment being so close to the start of school year we will have to hurry to fill out a roster and coaching staff so we can compete immediately," Turco said. "We only have two returning players and won't know exactly who is in the school until we start our workouts in September. "I am certainly not accustomed to losing and I do not plan on starting that now. We will get our team ready by following the template we have always used - make every player better by developing their individual skills and have them buy into (the) 'One Team, One Goal' concept." Turco said former Middlesex County College head men's basketball coach Corey Lowery and current Middlesex County College head baseball coach CJ Mooney both "helped me learn so much about the college in one or two conversations that I have been able to accomplish more than I ever imagined in such a short period of time." Turco praised the entire Middlesex County College athletics department, which he said has been welcoming and helpful. "Everyone I have come across have all gone out of their way to help me with anything I ask," he said.
