Red-hot shooting from the floor today versus the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves helped the No. 23 ranked Holmes Community College Bulldogs advance to the semi-finals of the Region XXIII Tournament at Mississippi College Thursday at 1 p.m. after the 74-60 win over the Wolves. The No. 4-seeded Bulldogs, now 22-4 overall, will face the No. 8-seeded Southwest Mississippi College Bears, who are 17-8 overall and who knocked off the No. 1-seeded Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers, 70-68. You can watch the game on holmesccmedia.com or listen live at breezynews.com. The Bulldogs and Wolves battled back and forth to start the game, and the game was tied at 11 with 14:13 left to play in the first half. Freshman Kassim Nicholson (6'6''-G/F) kept the Bulldogs in the game early with points in the paint. Holmes held a 21-17 lead with 8:52 left in the first half before the Bulldogs started pulling away just minutes after when sophomore guard Trevais Spencer (6'3''-G) hit three consecutive three-pointers to put Holmes up 30-17 with 7:12 left in the first half. Co-Lin then outscored the Bulldogs 10-7 the remaining seven minutes of the half to make the score, 37-27, at halftime. Spencer had 14 points at the break and Nicholson had 10. Holmes shot 56 percent from the floor in the first half, 50 percent from the three-point line and 50 percent from the free-throw line while Co-Lin shot 37 percent from the floor, 28 percent from the three-point line and 62.5 percent from the free-throw line in the first half. The Bulldogs led 41-30 with 17:46 left in the game and stretched it to 19 with 12:27 left in the game and went up as much as 24 at 56-32 halfway the second half. Holmes led 60-43 with 8:11 left after a Nicholson dunk. Justin Johnson scored and made a free throw with 6:30 left to put Holmes up 63-45. Javon Franklin (6'6''-F) had some easy dunks on breakaways late in the half, and Holmes pulled out the win. After shooting 84.2 percent in the second half, the Bulldogs finished the game shooting 68.2 percent from the field, 54.5 percent from the three-point line and 47.1 percent from the free-throw line. Spencer finished with 18 points while Nicholson had 16 and Johnson had 12. Franklin led with 10 rebounds.

T-Birds unable to overcome early hole in 86-77 road loss to Butler - 7 days ago
The Cloud County Community College men's basketball team has started the spring semester searching for itself, searching for the identity that helped the team upended nationally ranked Hutchinson and strung together three-straight conference wins prior to Christmas break. They showed glimpses on Monday, overcoming an early 19-point deficit to close within four of Butler Community College in the second half. But the consistency lacked in a disappointing 86-77 road loss to the Grizzlies. "W...   [read more]

Salem Community College (NJ) will be re-starting their men's basketball program for the 2019-20 season. I can confirm that they will tab Cabrini College (PA) assistant coach A.J. Williams as their new head basketball coach. Williams is a 2013 Cabrini grad who became an assistant at his alma mater back in August. He had previously served as an assistant coach at Immaculata University and Wesley College, and spent two seasons as the head coach at Seaford (DE) High School. Williams will fini...   [read more]

Panola outlasts Blinn down the stretch, 62-58 - 14 days ago
Blinn College men's basketball outscored Panola College in the second half, but fell just short of pulling off the victory as the Ponies walked off the court with the win, 62-58, on Monday night. With the loss, Blinn's overall record drops to 11-4 and conference record falls to 1-4. "I am extremely proud of our guys," said Scott Schumacher, Blinn head coach. "I thought we competed and played at a very high level intensity-wise and just fell short at the end." Kai Tease (6'1''-G) led the B...   [read more]
