Bellarmine tops Mitty, extends WCAL streak - Jan 11, 2018

Bellarmine didn't shoot particularly well Tuesday night. It also didn't take great care of the basketball. But it was plenty good enough to keep its streak of consecutive West Catholic Athletic League wins intact. The Bells extended the run to 19 games as Kendall Stubblefield scored 21 points - 13 after halftime - in a 60-49 victory at home over Archbishop Mitty. Bellarmine led the entire way to improve its record to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in league. Mitty, just one season removed from stunning Bellarmine to win the Central Coast Section's Open Division championship, fell to 2-11 and 0-3. 'It's really nice to be in a situation where there is clear room for improvement, but we won,' Bellarmine coach Patrick Schneider said. 'It's much better than the alternative of you have a lot to get better at but you didn't get the win. Mitty is tenacious and physical. They did a great job disrupting us.' Stubblefield was the clear star on this night as he made several agile moves near the basket to add to his point total. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound senior had eight points at halftime to send the Bells into the locker room with a 21-17 lead and 10 points in the third quarter as Bellarmine padded its lead. 'In every practice, in every game, there is somewhere between three and seven plays that just leave us speechless,' Schneider said. 'How can someone that big be that nimble? How can someone going that hard to the rim finish that soft? He's breathtaking when he is going downhill.' Jake Wojcik scored 13 points and Nathan Metzger added 11 points for Bellarmine, which hasn't lost in WCAL play since falling at Serra nearly 23 months ago. 'We're a good team right now, but we can be a lot better,' Stubblefield said. For Mitty, it was more of the same. If the Monarchs weren't in desperation mode Tuesday, they certainly are now. Mitty returned some notable players from last season's section championship team, including all-area player Riley Grigsby, but definitely is in danger of not even making the section playoffs this season. Mitty will need a .500 league record to qualify, which means it must win seven of its remaining 11 league games.
'We're going through a rough patch right now, but we're going to figure it out together,' Mitty coach Tim Kennedy said. 'We're going to find a way to get this turned around. We're taking lumps, but we have to dig in and find a way get consistent with some of our actions here.'
