HoopQueens laid groundwork for women’s basketball in Toronto. What the WNBA’s arrival means for the local league

Basketball has always been an expression of joy for Toronto native Nakissa Koomalsingh (5'4''-G) but as she prepares to kick off the third season of the grassroots women’s league she spearheads, there’s a feeling of gratitude.
That’s partly because for the first time ever a WNBA team is going to be based in Toronto and will start competing in 2026, something she and other women could only dream of when they were younger.
