James R.
James R. Schutz is the Owner, GM and Head Coach of the Elmira Bulldogs. This is a brand new franchise for the Eastern Basketball Alliance, but has yet two years of playing experience in other semi professional leagues. Mr. Schultz very gently agreed to answer to some of our questions, with a long, interesting text. See all his answers down:
1) Q: First, about this year's EBA league, what can you say to comment the 2009 season ? A: The talent in this year's 2009 version of the EBA is unreal, each
team is loaded with strong players from the NCAA D-1 and NCAA D-2 level and a lot of those player's already have professional experience. Talent wise and depth wise with so many strong teams you could make a case for this year's EBA being the most talented basketball minor league in the states outside of the NBDL.
2) Q: One year after leaving the ABA for the NPBL, you made another move, joining the Easten Basketball Alliance. What factored into this decision ? A: With the ABA we really no choice but to leave, my partner at the time decided to leave in-season, and it took time to find a new financial partner which I did in Charles Berch and we moved the team to Elmira and the Elmira Bulldogs were born. Charles works on the pit crew for the Rolex Racing circuit, hes a professional photographer for the AP who has been published in everything from Sports Illustrated magazine to the USA Today news paper and has worked the past handful of superbowls for the AP including this year's superbowl, I couldn't ask for a better partner. As far as the NPBL goes it was a constant struggle to get in communication with the league office, the president would disapear for week's at a time and not let anyone know about it. The NPBL league website would go over a month with out being updated, it was frustrating from a owner/GM perspective. Dick and Cynthia Anzolut, the owners of the EBA take things so serious and professional that it is refreshing. You have no idea how nice it is to have a minor league that actually has a league office fully staffed with office hours Monday-Friday where someone always picks up the phone after the first ring. After talking with Dick and Cynthia and seeing how they aproach running the EBA it was a no brainer that we wanted to be a part of it.
3) Q: The Eastern Basketball Alliance has decided to increase its teams line-up to 15 in 2009. What do you think about this ? A: I see no problem in the expansion, it seems like the EBA weeded out some of the weaker teams from the EBA's past and kept the strong team's in Harrisburg, Delaware and Alexandria and then added a bunch of new strong team's to really take the EBA to the next level of minor league basketball.
4) Q: Now, about your team. You are 2-0 now, and have just beaten one of the highest rated teams, Alexandria, led by Aubin Scott (6'2''-G-83, agency: Strategic Sports, college: LIU Brooklyn). Can you tell us some about the 2009 Bulldogs and what do you expect to do in this season ? A: Yeah, 2-0 is a great way to start the season. This is the 2nd staight season we defeated Alexandria (last season in the NPBL we defeated them) but the Alexandria Avengers never make it easy, short-handed or not they always have great player's with NCAA D-1 talent and really make us work for the win.
