The American Basketball Association (ABA) announced that the Sunrise Jewels will begin play when the 2017-2018 season begins in early November. "It might seem late to be adding a team," stated ABA co-founder Joe Newman , "but actually the owners have been working all spring and summer putting things together and have been working closely with Lori and Mike Watson of the South Florida Gold also. They are ready to compete.
The team will be co-owned by Evaristo Pangillnan, a native of the Philippines and a graduate of the Cebu Institute of Technology and Central Colleges of the Philippines. He is currently working for the FAA Federal Aviation Administration in Miami, FL and has an extenstive background in sports and Business. Mr. Pangillnan is the President of the Sinulog Festival of Miami, formerly Vice Chairman of the Asian American Basketball League, Chairman of Philam Sports, former City Director of Filipino Basketball Assn of South Florida and will serve as Head Coach of the Jewels.
"We are very pleased and proud to be a part of the ABA," added Pangillnan. "The Florida Division is one of the best in the league and it is our goal to be one of the best in our Division and the league. We will work very hard."
