Miller Earns First Victory as Head Coach

Former Northern State Standout, Ryan Miller (191-G-75, college: Northern St.) proved he has as much prowess on the sideline as he did as a player. Miller coached his Dakota Lightning to a 113-99 victory over Frontier City last night at Hodges Gymnasium in Ft. Dodge Iowa. It was the season opener for the Lightning and the second loss in a row for the River Dogz. The Lightning got six 3 pointers on 6 for 6 shooting behind the arc from former Dakota Wesleyan standout, Austin Lebadoer. Lebadoer and Quinton Mitchell each had 23 and John White contributed 21 points.Terrance Newby dished out 6 assists and Major Parker contributed 9 rebounds to lead the Lighning The River Dogz placed 5 players in double figures. Brian Taylor led all scorers for the home team with 22, followed by player/coach Jason Sutherland with 15, Richard Dumas 14, Joe Fermino 13 and Rob Griffin 11.
The Dogz found themselves behind 11-0 three minutes into the first quarter but rallied back on a 21-7 run led by Richard Dumas and Rob Griffin. The second quarter saw the Dakota guards go on a tear and take an 18 point lead into halftime. The third quarter saw the Dogz battle back to get within 8 but that would be as close as they got. Dakota held a double digit lead the entire 4th quarter. The Dogz also saw the debut of their new big man, 6'10'' Marvin Gay who finished the game with 8 points and 9 rebounds.
