Longtime Montana Tech head coach, Rick Dessing has been named the head coach of the Magic City Snow Bears. Dessing was a 1979 graduate of Ball State University and went on to earn his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin. Dessing served as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin and then took over the Montana Tech program where he has been the last 17 years. Dessing stepped down this season to look for a new challenge. Dessing guided his teams to 7 conference titles and two national tournament berths during his tenure at Montana Tech. Dessing is married with three children in college. 'The deciding factor for me accepting this position was when John Jordan (Commissioner) told me the Minot fans had high expectations. I wanted to come to a place that was used to winning and wanted to see a champion on the court.' Says Coach Dessing.
Dessing's hiring concluded what Jordan said was a long search. 'We really felt under the gun in Minot to name a coach. We had offered the job to five different candidates and they all had turned it down. Two of them took other jobs in our league. It seems many of the coaches did not like the idea of already having three former Snow Bears on their roster. They felt there were better players available on the market. Of course I think they are wrong. It is hard to beat the likes of Mac Irvin, Tim Pledger and Nate Green. Coach Dessing was well aware of the talents of these three players and was excited about the opportunity. In addition he is extremely educated as to the top regional players in the area.' Jordan went on to say that negotiations were continuing with Bryant Basemore's agent, Rhonda Price to bring him back to Magic City as well.
