In the first game of the opening day of the 2001 Tournament of the Americas, Brazil easily beat USA 116-78. The game lasted only five minutes, when the scoreboard was tied at 12, after that, Brazil, led by Marcelinho's 20 points in the opening quarter, made a 27 - 4 to lead 39 - 16. The young united state's squad, comprised of JUCO players, never had a chance to recover after that as Brazil kept extending the lead that got to a maximum of 45 (97-52) in the last quarter.
