Daly's Jumper Lifts Christopher Newport Past Salisbury for CAC Championship - Feb 26, 2017

For the third year in a row, the Capital Athletic Conference men's basketball championship game between Salisbury and Christopher Newport came down to the final seconds, with senior Tim Daly's jumper from the top left wing with 1.2 seconds remaining lifting the Captains to a dramatic 63-62 victory over the Sea Guls in Newport News, Va.
With the win, the Captains (25-2) earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. CNU will find out its opponent and first-round site during Monday's NCAA selection show at 12:30 p.m.
Additionally, the CNU women's team also captured the title earlier today, marking just the third time in league history that the same institution has won basketball crowns in the same year. Marymount completed the feat in1991-92, while Salisbury did it in 2014-15.
The Captains will enter NCAA's riding a 19-game winning streak. After advancing to the Final Four last year, CNU will be making its 21st trip to the NCAA Tournament, and fourth since head coach John Krikorian took over the program.
The Sea Gulls (20-7), meanwhile, must wait until Monday to hope to receive an at-large bid into the postseason for the second year in a row.
Championship matchups between these two sides have proven to have a flair for the dramatic, as this year's version marked the third consecutive one-point decision in the title game. Salisbury topped CNU 58-57 in 2015, and CNU returned the favor with a 68-67 overtime win in 2016.
The first half was neck-and-neck throughout the entire stanza, with 11 lead changes and five ties during the opening 20 minutes of play. Salisbury took a 30-25 edge into the intermission aided by a 7-0 spurt in the final 2:30 of the half.
The Sea Gulls held the lead for nearly the entire second half, stretching their advantage to as many as 11 (52-41) with 11:26 left on the clock.
Salisbury led 61-52 with just over three minutes remaining, but the Captains stormed back over the closing minutes, spearheaded by a personal 7-1 run from Marcus Carter (6'2''-G). Carter drove to the hoop for a layup, drilled a three-pointer and made another layup in the span of 1:30 to pull CNU within 62-59 with 59 seconds left.
A pair of Rayshard Brown (5'11''-PG-94) free throws with 20 seconds left pulled CNU within one at 62-61.
Following an SU timeout, Carter came through once again for the Captains with a steal on the Sea Gulls' in-bounds pass. Carter drove to the basket and came up short on a running layup, but Aaron McFarland snatched the offensive board to keep CNU with possession.
CNU called timeout with 13 seconds remaining, setting up a wild final few seconds prior to Daly's game-winner. Several helter-skelter seconds resulted in Kevin Regimbal (6'2''-G) having the ball beyond the three-pointer arc on the left wing. After losing and regaining control of the ball, Regimbal was triple-teamed and found Daly near the top of the key. The senior forward then drilled the game-winner to propel the Captains to their second straight CAC crown.
Daly led all scorers with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Carter added 16 points and Regimbal notched eight points, seven boards, four assists, and two steals.
For SU, Wyatt Smith double-doubled with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Chad Barcikowski (6'5''-F) tallied 18 points, including four treys, and seven rebounds.
