Quinnipiac Completes Historic Run in Historic Fashion, Tops SFU for NCAA Bid - Mar 18, 2013
Hamden, CT - Quinnipiac won it all, and did so in record fashion. The top-seeded Bobcats posted the largest margin of victory in NEC Tournament history, topping No. 4 Saint Francis U, 72-33, in the 2013 NEC Womens Basketball Championship Game presented by Ruby Tuesday.
The win makes Quinnipiac only the fifth team in Northeast Conference history to complete an undefeated run through league play (both regular season and tournament). The Bobcats went a perfect 18-0 in NEC regular season contests and followed that effort up by notching three straight NEC Tournament wins to capture the leagues automatic bid to the Big Dance.
More impressive than the historic run itself may have been the fashion in which Quinnipiac completed it. Going up against a Saint Francis program that has won an unprecedented 11 NEC Tournament titles, the Bobcats appeared to have little interest in allowing the Red Flash a 12th.
Quinnipiac used a suffocating defensive effort to limit the Flash to an all-time NEC Tournament low of 33 points.
Junior forward Brittany McQuain (5'11''-F) scored 14 points, on 6-of-11 shooting, and grabbed seven rebounds in the title tilt on her way to capturing the Tournament MVP award. A key cog in Quinnipiacs deep, expansive rotation, McQuain averaged 11.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per contest over the course of three postseason contests.
