The Gold Rush (13-9 overall, 4-6 GCAC) won its third in a row and defeated the Badgers (10-9, 4-6) for the first time in its last six tries. Spring Hill has lost four straight. Michael Harvey (6'3''-G) added 17 points, Devin Andrew (6'4''-G) 16 and Cordell Hadnot (6'7''-F) 10 for Xavier, which produced four double-figure scorers for the second time in three games. Marcus Coleman (5'11''-G) and Nick Brown (6'8''-C) scored 15 points apiece for Spring Hill. Xavier outscored Spring Hill 7-0 in the final 90 seconds, with Joseph -- a 5-foot-9 point guard and a former O. Perry Walker High School standout -- beginning the burst with a basket with 1:08 remaining and concluding it with two free throws with 11 seconds to play. Joseph, who entered the game shooting 50 percent from the line, made a season-best 8-of-9 free throws. Coleman, Spring Hill's career leader in 3-pointers made, scored just three points in the second half and was 1-of-6 from behind the arc after the break. Xavier trailed 22-15 through the first 12 minutes before a 10-1 run, capped by Harvey's 3-pointer at 3:57, gave the Rush its first lead, 25-23. Joseph and Harvey combined for all the points in a 7-0 run during the final 2 minutes of the half which put Xavier ahead to stay and gave the Rush a 35-32 lead at the break. Xavier survived a stretch of nearly 11 minutes in the second half when it was 2-for-17 from the floor. The Rush made 17 second-half free throws to offset that cold spell and Badger rallies which trimmed XU's lead to one or two points three times in the final nine minutes. Xavier outshot the Badgers 45 to 41 percent from the floor and outrebounded them 35-28. The Rush grabbed all 11 of its offensive rebounds in the second half. The next Xavier contest will start at 7 p.m. Saturday against NAIA No. 5 LSU-Shreveport at The Barn in an NABC Coaches Against Cancer Game. source: Xavier (LA)

Michael Harvey (6'3''-G) scored 21 points Saturday, including the first four points of overtime, to rally Xavier (LA) to a 72-67 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory over Dillard in the Bleu Devil Classic at Lakefront Arena. The victory was the second in a row for the Gold Rush (12-9 overall, 3-6 GCAC). Dillard (2-13, 0-9) has dropped nine straight. Dillard led 56-51 and had possession with two minutes remaining, but Xavier rallied and tied the score at 60 when Devin Andrew made a 3-pointer with 15.5 seconds remaining. Dillard missed 3-of-4 free throws in the final 37 seconds and missed twice from the floor on the final possession of regulation. After Harvey scored the first four points of overtime, freshman teammate Joseph Wanto (5'9''-G) accounted for the Gold Rush's final eight points -- three baskets and an assist to Jamaan Kenner for another basket. Andrew recorded his first collegiate double, 17 points and a career-best 11 rebounds. Donald Fondel scored 13 points, James Burkes 12 and Autrail Manning 11 for Dillard, which never led in overtime. Dillard had a chance to force a second overtime when trailing 70-67, but Joseph stole Avry Ingram's inbounds pass in the backcourt after a Dillard timeout and scored a layup with 4.7 seconds remaining for the final points. Joseph drove the middle of the lane for a layup and Xavier's biggest lead of overtime, 70-62. It was the first overtime victory of the season for the Gold Rush, which lost at home to Texas College in November and at Wiley in December in overtime. Xavier leads the series with its city and HBCU rival 71-47 and has won eight of the past nine meetings, including three overtime victories. Both teams will begin the second half of their GCAC schedules with 7:30 p.m. games Thursday. Xavier will travel to Spring Hill, and Dillard will play host to William Carey. source: Xavier (LA)
