PULASKI, Tenn. - MMC men's basketball took a break from league play on Monday evening, downing Oakwood University, 65-60. The RedHawks battled against an athletic Ambassador team early on, but outlasted OU, as Ree McCrory went on to score 24, followed closely by James Justice with 19.
LaQuantis Stewart joined double-figure scoring with 11 points, one rebound shy of a double-double with nine. McCrory picked up five steals on the night, as Justice and Demario Williams each handed out three assists. Justice was perfect from the free throw line, 5-5, while McCrory scored 12 of his points from the charity stripe, due much in part to technical fouls credited to Oakwood.
MMC trailed early, seeing a 16-10 deficit with just under ten minute to go, but climbed back by 7:45 when Williams dished one to EJ Kirby for a 17-16 score. The teams exchanged leads for the next several minutes, and by the half, the Ambassadors had used a last second basket for a 31-30 edge.
Justice made the opening bucket in the second period, and after MMC had extended their lead to 38-35 on another Justice score, Oakwood went on a 6-0 run that gave them a 41-38 lead. OU took their edge to 48-44 before Stewart and McCrory made back-to-back baskets to force an Ambassador timeout and tie the game at 48 with seven minutes left. Two converted free throws from Stewart after the timeout gave the RedHawks their final lead. Minutes later at 4:17, OU was called for a flagrant foul, followed by two technical that allowed the RedHawks to cushion their lead to seven when McCrory made five of the six free throws.
Despite two late baskets from Oakwood, MMC hung onto their lead, clenching the 65-60 win. The RedHawks take to the hardwood in Jackson, Tennessee on Saturday to face off with Union at 4pm.
