PERTH Lynx star Samantha Whitcomb (5'10''-G/F-88, college: Washington) has taken a massive step towards realising her WNBA dream after signing with the Seattle Storm. The agreement will see the 28-year-old join the US team for training camp, where she'll push to secure a permanent contract. Whitcomb's call-up comes on the back of a remarkable WNBL season with the Lynx, where the MVP favourite has averaged 24.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. 'So excited and grateful for this opportunity!,' Whitcomb wrote on Twitter after the news broke. The California-born guard has long courted a WNBA call-up after being the last player cut during tryouts for the Chicago Sky in 2010. Whitcomb told PerthNow last December she had grown after the experience of her unsuccessful attempt to break into the world's top league. 'I learnt a lot from it. It's been something I've kept in the back of my mind, in terms of understanding what that level is and what they require,' Whitcomb said. 'The other girls were so much smarter and faster and efficient, and those are the things I've tried to work towards each year. 'The player I am now compared to the player that tried out for the WNBA and was cut is totally different. 'I'd love to go back and just have a crack. In terms of career goals, it's always been that last thing that I've been reaching for.' Whitcomb will head to the US at the completion of the WNBL season, with the Lynx sitting in second place on the table ahead of the playoffs later this month.
