PERTH Lynx star Samantha Whitcomb (5'10''-G/F-88, college: Washington) has taken a massive step towards realising her WNBA dream after signing with the Seattle Storm. The agreement will see the 28-year-old join the US team for training camp, where she'll push to secure a permanent contract. Whitcomb's call-up comes on the back of a remarkable WNBL season with the Lynx, where the MVP favourite has averaged 24.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. 'So excited and grateful for this opportunity!,' Whitcomb wrote on Twitter after the news broke. The California-born guard has long courted a WNBA call-up after being the last player cut during tryouts for the Chicago Sky in 2010. Whitcomb told PerthNow last December she had grown after the experience of her unsuccessful attempt to break into the world's top league. 'I learnt a lot from it. It's been something I've kept in the back of my mind, in terms of understanding what that level is and what they require,' Whitcomb said. 'The other girls were so much smarter and faster and efficient, and those are the things I've tried to work towards each year. 'The player I am now compared to the player that tried out for the WNBA and was cut is totally different. 'I'd love to go back and just have a crack. In terms of career goals, it's always been that last thing that I've been reaching for.' Whitcomb will head to the US at the completion of the WNBL season, with the Lynx sitting in second place on the table ahead of the playoffs later this month.

Tiffany Hayes (5'10''-G/F-89, college: Connecticut) scored 22 points and the Atlanta Dream never trailed as they breezed to an 81-63 victory Wednesday over the Chicago Sky on Wednesday afternoon for their first victory of the season. The Dream (1-1) recovered from a season-opening 101-78 drubbing against the Dallas Wings and maintained control of this game from start to finish. Hayes led the way by shooting 4 of 6 from 3-point range. She made more 3-pointers than the entire Chicago Sky ro...   [read more]

Shorthanded Sparks keep Fever winless, 87-70 - 2 days ago
Nneka Ogwumike (6'3''-F-90, college: Stanford) had 25 points and 10 rebounds to help Sparks beat the Indiana Fever 87-70 on Tuesday night. Los Angeles, which took over the top spot in the AP WNBA power poll this week, jumped out to a 20-6 lead and it was 50-36 at the half behind 17 points from Ogwumike. Indiana pulled within 67-57 early in the fourth quarter but the Sparks answered with a 9-2 run and led by double figures the rest of the way. Chelsea Gray's buzzer beater lifts Sparks past Lynx 77-76 in finals rematch - 4 days ago
There was no better way for the WNBA to open its 22nd season than with another intense matchup between the Los Angeles Sparks and the Minnesota Lynx. After the Lynx received their championship rings and raised a fourth banner in the arena, Chelsea Gray (5'11''-G-92, college: Duke) and the Sparks gave them their parting shot. Gray had 18 points, including a double-clutch off-balance in the lane at the buzzer that gave the short-handed Sparks a 77-76 victory over the Lynx on Sunday in a dra...   [read more]
