Zellous
Shavonte Zellous (5'10''-G-86, college: Pittsburgh) is leaving the Indiana Fever after six seasons and reuniting with coach Bill Laimbeer in New York. The New York Liberty announced Monday that they have signed the eighth-year guard to a free-agent contract. Zellous, 29, was a key player on the Fever's 2012 WNBA championship team and made the All-Star team in 2013, when she averaged 14.7 points a game and was the league's Most Improved Player. She averaged 8.4 points per game in a reserve role last season and has a career average of 9.3. The Fever announced the re-signing of two restricted free agents, wing Shenise Johnson and center Lynetta Kizer. Johnson had a breakout season in 2015, averaging 10.9 points in the regular season and 12.4 in the playoffs. Zellous was drafted by Laimbeer and the Detroit Shock in 2009. She was a two-time All-Big East selection while at Pittsburgh. 'I know the franchise and players are hungry to win a WNBA championship, and share the same drive and determination I do to make that happen,' Zellous said in a statement released by the Liberty. One Fever player, center Erlana Larkins (6'1''-F-86, college: N.Carolina), posted on Twitter her disappointment that the team did not re-sign Zellous. Kelly Krauskopf, president and general manager of the Fever, said the team's priority was to re-sign those on the roster eligible for free agency. 'I knew this would be difficult with our salary cap situation going into 2016, as we were already at risk of losing a player due to potentially better offers coming in,' she said in a statement. 'Rightly so, Shavonte had lots of offers, including ours, and I know she had to do what was best for her. 'I am thankful to her for all she did for us both on and off the court. Without a doubt, she was an integral part of all of our team's success and most notably her part in winning the title in 2012.' In a statement from the Liberty, team president Isiah Thomas said Zellous is a player 'who fits our defensive-minded culture.'

Stars collapse in fourth, fall to Wings - 2 days ago
Whether it was battling injuries to key players or trying to mesh a retooled roster, the winless Stars remained optimistic. They said it was simply a matter of time before their talent, chemistry and potential came together. And when they did, the real Stars would appear. And indeed, for 30 minutes Thursday against the Dallas Wings, the Stars displayed what could be. During the final 9 minutes, they displayed what has been. Undone by a rash of missed shots, turnovers and defensive lapses,...   [read more]
