Atlanta, Ga. (March 4, 2010) ---The United States Basketball Association (USBA) canceled its national basketball player combine. 'The combine was scheduled to be held at the Woodruff Physical Activity Building on the campus of Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia on Saturday, March 6, 2010,' said USBA Vice President of Basketball Operation Kenneth Green. The combine will not be held as previously advertised. 'We have been inundated with request for a tryout with one of our teams; however 90% of the applicants requested to be allowed to go to a specific city, to try out for one of our team. To be fair to everyone, registration procedures will be changed to adhere to meet the players request,' said Green. 'It appears the economy is still a factor in a lot of peoples lives, the cost of airfare, the hotel and meal expense seems to have been a significant factor and we certainly understand, after all this is Single A basketball.'
The league reported 419 players contacted the USBA to inquire about positions on league teams. 'Almost all confirmed registrants, 46 players in all, came from the Atlanta area,' said Green. Basketball players will now be able to email and telephone the Head Coach directly to receive additional information and instructions. The league will conduct open tryouts in each team city. Try outs will be open to all qualified basketball players. Basketball players can attend a tryout on Saturday, March 13 and March 20, 2010. All eligible players will be accepted at the local team tryout.
Registration will be conducted on the mornings the tryouts are to be held.
The sign up period for the combine was originally set to begin on March 1, 2010, however, according to league sources the change was made to better serve the request of the participants. 'Agnes Scott College is a fine gymnasium and they have great facilities, however we have heard from basketball players that they would rather sign up in the town of their choice. We are a new league and we are responsible to our prospective players, we want our players to feel comfortable with our procedures and to hold a national combine just to collect money is something we will not do'
'We are working tirelessly in our pursuit to find the best players available for all USBA teams; this will enable us to provide our fans the very best minor league professional basketball players from day one,' said USBA President and C.E.O., Duane Allen Jenkins . 'Allowing players to go to the city of their choice is a truly special and unique opportunity for all of our coaches to evaluate basketball players that are probably from that city,' continued Jenkins.
Basketball players will participate in scrimmage games, agility drills and conditioning exercises. All players will be evaluated by the leagues coaching staff. USBA coaching staff will then select the players represent their local team.
USBA individual team tryouts are scheduled for March 13, 2010 and March 20, 2010. Players will be charged a fee of $75.00 to participate in the tryouts. The league will provide the required documents to the players who participate in the tryout. Registrations will begin at 8:00 am. Drills will start at 10:00 am Basketball players are required to have a minimum of two years experience on the collegiate level in order to participate individual team tryouts.
Players participating in the individual team tryouts will receive lunch from Subway. Deer Park will provide bottled water to the players and coaches. Trainers and paramedics will be on hand to assist participants.
The USBA has sixteen teams in three divisions. The teams are spread out over nine southern states. Please refer to the league website at www.usbaball.com . Individual team tryout signup will begin March 13 and March 20, 2010 at 8:30 and will continue until all participants are registered. Complete instruction on player registrations and information will be made available the leagues website. According to the league, the registration period was changed to allow more time for college players whose teams may not be invited to the NCAA tournament. The USBA utilizes medium to small college and university gymnasiums for the home location of their teams. All USBA coaches will select players from this tryout to field their team for the upcoming season.
Basketball player compensation package includes; $350.00 per week, $25.00 sponsor paid appearances, 25% commission on sponsorship sales, a daily meal at Golden Coral Buffet Restaurant, workman compensation and housing, when needed. Each team plays a thirty game schedule, fifteen home games and fifteen games away.
