As is tradition, arch rivals the Cary Invasion and the Bull City Legacy opened their respective seasons last Saturday, this time in Durham at Voyager Academy and, in what has become their tradition, both teams gave those attending a show. These two teams really don't care for each other much, but that they do respect each other's game is apparent. This due, in part, to both teams carrying players on their rosters who used to play for the other team. While, too, many of them have been teammates at some point during their earlier playing days, so winning carries with it personal bragging rights. If you had walked into the game at any time except the last few minutes you would have witnessed two evenly matched offenses out-maneuvering and out-shooting the other; the lead see-sawing--Bull City ahead after one, the Invasion ahead after two, and Bull City ahead by two, after three. Yes, there was defense but it was so evenly matched it basically canceled the efforts of the other out statistically. High points shooter of the game was Durham's Ian Gregory (6'7''-G/F-89, college: St.Thomas, FL) racking up 29, while Cary's Vivian Destin put-in 28. The Invasion's power forward Tim Bullock scored 26 (seven of them 3's!), as did the Legacy's J'Mell Walters. Others in double digits were Cary's Al Johnson (10) and Sly Brooks (19), and for Durham Mark Jones Jr. (6'5''-G, college: Fayetteville St.) Jr. (20) and big man Raheem Oshodi (6'10''-C-86, college: N.C.Central) (13). Other stats of note are Cary's point guard Trey Daye with 9-assists, and the Legacy's point guard JJ Barbee providing 8. Cary scored 11-of-16 from the line (69%) while Durham sunk 14-of-22 (64%); and from the field the Invasion shot 52% with BCL shooting at 56%. Cary had 24 fouls while Durham only logged 17. So with the teams this evenly matched you might question why the 11-point spread at the final buzzer? The answer is simply that in the last 2-minutes Durham outscored the Invasion 13-2, more than enough to take the win 117-106, as well as add another BCL win to their series record which Cary leads 7-4. The teams will meet again in February.
